They are in comas, either by the plane crash or each person/couple went into the coma independently. The plane crash could be the introduction onto the island for the group of new coma patients into the experiment.

The simulated environment allows each of the coma patients to interact with each other, and the researchers conducting the experiment and with family members. The goal of the experiment is to draw the patients out of their comas.

I came up with this idea yesterday, and did a search today and found some other sites with the exact same theory, but I couldn’t find this theory here, so I thought I’d post it to see what people think.

In this model, when people die they are either really dieing in real life, or they are coming out of the coma. The shadows are related to reawakening, and Locke almost came out of it before and Ecko did come out of the coma. The whispers people hear are people talking in the room with them - actual people talking (researchers/family).

The others are either researchers participating in the project or family members coming into the project to interact (Lockes father). They are not actually in comas, although Ben might be — he thinks he spent his whole life on the island (although he was not born there). Rousseau may also be a longtime coma patient in the experiment. Lockes father said that the last thing he remembered was being hit by a car. He could be in a coma too, and introduced into the experiment.

Jacob could be a researcher who talks to Ben, and also talked to Locke when he realized Locke was there. They may be in separate physical rooms, which is why Locke didn’t hear what was said to Ben, and vice-versa.

Women who become pregnant on the “island” die because they must be removed from the program. They are not pregnant, but those emotionally involved with a reason to not want to leave the island (ie; they have a baby) can’t participate in the experiment anymore because they don’t want to let go of the island, and thus won’t wake up. They let Claire be an exception because she didn’t want the baby to begin with and doesn’t have as strong of an emotional bond. Also, because they felt that it may help Charlie come out of his coma.

Jack, in the future flashes, fell into drugs and alcohol because he suffered trauma from coming out of the coma and experiment and still thinks the island was real.

There are lots of other mysteries that are solved by this explanation. The islands healing powers, how Ecko’s brother’s plane was there, the invisible monster, why noone can leave the island, etc. etc.

I’m sorry to have to break this to you, but this is a notion that has long since been debunked by the show creators. The survivors are conscious people that have really crashed on a real Island.

Purgatory’s another popular idea that is also debunked.

On the bright side, you’re on a website that has a ton of waaaaay more interesting theories than comas or purgatory. Every cloud, etc. Have a look around, it might spark off a whole new way for you to think about the show.

I thought about this idea as well - just like the film “Coma” starring Michael Douglas and Richard Widmark - unfortunately debunked - but you never know!!

Don’t you just hate it when you come up with an idea, only to find out someone else has thought of it already?? I know I do! This is also similar to the ‘plugged into the Matrix’ theories that were so prevalent. Just keep reading theories and more and more ideas will come to you. There’s so many holes, it’s easy to fill in the blanks. The hard part is getting it right!

answer is negative they are not in comas, but if they were, would they all be sharing the same coma, or are all the characters just part of one person’s consciousness?

It must be a time loop. I haven’t heard this theory in three years.

OMG! Kellog’s Time Loops! Every box comes with a free discredited theory inside. Or, better yet, a LOST decoder RING.

Yep, it’s true! This theory has been debunked, and so is the notion of it being like the movie “Identity”.
