The All-Seeing Eye is a symbol that has been used for millenniums by people from around the world. For as long as it has been used, it has had many definitions. A higher power - a minds eye - an illuminated conscience - a secret government society aiming to conquer the world - and on and on and on … But, how does it apply to LOST?
The very first shot from episode one from season one is of Jack’s single eye. Many episodes start with a brief shot of a character’s single eye. These opening shots pass quickly, and are easily forgotten during an episode of LOST, with all the drama that ensues. One of the biggest keys to unlocking the mystery of LOST is generously given to us during the first second of the season one pilot. There is some higher power, higher source at work here. Of course, this is no big secret. What is this higher power? What does this All-Seeing Eye represent?
The All-Seeing Eye has had many definitions. My personal favorite is the association it has with the Illuminati - a secret government society. They have been claimed to hold extraordinary power over our planet. The power to manipulate human thought, to initiate global conflict, and to control all the money and power on earth. And that’s just for starters. All you have to do is look on the back of any US dollar bill, and you’ll see their symbol, the All-Seeing Eye, atop the pyramid. Symbols are extremely important to the Illuminati. Being aware of this fact, it’s amazing how often you’ll find pyramids and All-Seeing Eyes all around you all the time. These are not the only symbols they use. Discussing the Illuminati would be a dissertation in itself, so I won’t go into that here. But, if you are not familiar with the Illuminati, I would highly suggest researching it independently.
Let’s consider a more spiritual approach. The two eyes of the human head see what’s around him. There’s the computer - there’s a tree - there’s my Mom and my Dad. They assist us in surviving day to day on a surface level. They get you to the bathroom in the morning and to your car and on the road. But the All-Seeing Eye, or Minds-Eye as some call it, is a universal symbol representing inner vision, higher knowledge and spiritual sight. It can see ones hopes and dreams. It can see ones thoughts and fears. The ego is not attached to this definition of the Minds-Eye. It is not concerned with your name, your location, the current year or your annual salary. It does not know time. This is very significant because I’m into the time travel related LOST theories. Again, discussing LOST time travel theories is for another post. Although, if you’re interested, here’s a great one to check out:

The All-Seeing Eye can be also be found in the Bible’s Book of Genesis. That sneaky serpent tells Adam and Eve that their eyes can be opened if they eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. In Hebrew the word ‘eyes’ can be translated into ‘knowledge’. Also, ‘opened’ can be translated to ‘broadened’. The snake was telling Adam and Eve that their knowledge could be broadened if they eat the fruit. Here’s the kicker. After closer examination, one discovers that the Hebrew word for eyes is singular, not plural. The serpent was NOT referring to the two eyes above the nose, but the Minds-Eye. The serpent was telling Adam and Eve that eating the forbidden fruit would broaden the knowledge of their Minds-Eye.
Feel confident that the writers began all those episodes with the single eye shot for a darn good reason. But why? What reason? How does it play into LOST? …
The scar over Locke’s eye? The Looking Glass? The super powerful and influential (Illuminati) Charles Widmore? Peter’s missing eye?
… Well, now you know how I feel.
To conclude, a quote from Mark Twain
“The common eye sees only the outside of things, and judges by that, but the ‘all seeing eye’ pierces through, and reads the heart and the soul, finding there capacities which the outside didn’t indicate or promise, and which the other kind couldn’t detect.”

Interesting post and well written. I always like to see someone who can string a sentence together as well as a few good ideas. I take the eye to be symbolic of point of view. This is a show which jumps around from one person’s POV to the other all the time. It’s just good efficient visual storytelling - a way of saying, “hey, this is a Jack episode”.
In fact, it seems less symbolic of the all-seeing eye, and more symbolic of the inadequacy of the narrow, subjective point of view. Everything’s a mystery and everyone keeps secrets from everyone else. Welcome to the wonderful world of not knowing what’s going on. I don’t think it necessarily implies that an omnipotent power exists on the island. Hasn’t it been suggested that not even God can see the island?
Excellent post, kris! For the most part, I’m reluctant on the time-travel theories, but I’m currently reading Island by Aldous Huxley which has a passage that could tie in with this. Its fairly long, and I’m struggling to keep my eyes awake as it is, but tomorrow, I’ll try to post it on here. I’d like to get your thoughts on it anyway.
Nice work Kris. Funnily enough there was a recent post about the evil eye and I thought this was where you were also headed but I’m pleased to see you brought a new angle to it.
Great post Kris and lots of directions to go in with it. Just a couple more allusions: Odin sacrifices an eye to gain wisdom. And in Greek mythology the Fates have one eye that they pass between the three.
Welcome, kris and congrats on your first theory! +1
See mrs sawyers’s comment, she took the words right out of my mouth!!!
Good work, nicely done!
Well it is dubbed the “EyeLand” after all!
This is excellent.Ive often thought is there some kind of New World Order going on hereA fter all DI have the best intelligence gathering abilities ive ever heard of[from an island^^]the new world order is meant to comprise of politicians and business men[google bildenberg, rockerfeller, arsehole g.w bush for more info on NWO]. And who do we have paik, widmore…….very powerful men in the business world,Although lost seems to stay away from politics.eg hurley to sun “so what part of korea are you from, good or bad” Sun looks a little annoyed then replys ” the good”I can not think of a time when politics has come into it,any one think of a time???
im with Kris on this,if you are not familiar with illuminati[though given the nature of this site i find that hard to believe]then please do so.Im not prone to believing in to many conspiracies, but the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming, and to be honest i feel its naive not to believe it,I know this isnt a forum for my views and opinions, but i think that anyone into lost not familiar with masons or illuminati will enjoy what they read.my grandfather was mason[no bs],which would of been passed through to my father to me,it wasnt luckily.my GF left and was found dead in his home three years ago in suspicous circumstances,i will not digress, but my father believes he was killed coz he left and new things.i personally think my father is just grieving and is looking to blame someone.but there are lots of these kind of cases, read em,its your world aswell.be your own all seeing eye.do not be blind to the truth.
Well, thanks for the feedback folks! This is a great site. I’m very much looking forward towards further discussing the show with everyone.
Kris, I have read the book by David Eicke and the “Illuminati”, and it is a fascinating read! There is also another connection to your thoughts, which tend to go hand in hand with your theory. If, you have studied the origins of “The Free Masons”, and what their agenda is, towards world domination, you will see further evidence. Several of their mandates are to conquer religion, education, all financial institutions, as well as full domination of the media! I think you can see these references, already exist in today’s society. An interesting side note is, that “the Knights of the round Table were Freemasons, and so was Leonardo Da Vinci. One, only has to look at the “all seeing eye” on US currency, at the top of the pyramid, and see the the structures of the “obelisk”, especially in DC, to create speculation!
Kris, I ran out of room. Nicely written and a fascinating read! +1
