Tom where is my tape recorder?
— Lojozz
Ok i have already mentioned i may be a bit worse for wear, i’m a bit drunk and sans a spell check, so forgive me/humour me!
Myself and Angelo have been debating long and hard about the Ben letting the asault on the losties go ahead.
My basic problem with it is this: Ben has lost his tape recorder, on this he has given Juliet instructions to mark tents etc. But it hasn’t been delivered. If i was leading a raid and the instructions had been carried out even though the message hadn’t got through i’d be more than a little cautious.
Previous to the attack we have Richard saying Ben, if you move things forward Juliet may not have had time to mark the tents, Ben replies well we’ll take tham all. Juliet doesn’t/shouldn’t have the tape. The losties have it purely because Locke stole it. What i’m saying is either
1)Ben has lost it big time and forgotten that the recorder has gone missing.
2) Its incredible bad writing.
3) Its all going to plan as far as Ben is concerned. He asked Tom to send Locke to him. Loke obeyed and when he got there Ben was listening to Juliets tape, He told Locke that Juliet was a mole and made a deal of putting the recorder where Locke could easily steal it. He knows Locke will give the tape to his friends, who will act upon it. Though the fact still remains that the message as far as anybody is concerned didn’t get to the intended recipient.
Please somebody make sense of this!
Yes, Door Number Three is correct Lojozz! +1
Ben is the master manipulator and one would have to figure that all of this fits into his master plan! Ben is always in control, always knows what he is doing at all times, and capable of anticipated outcomes. He strategically weighs all of the options and potential scenarios set before him. He also has an uncanny ability to read people, which is beneficial in predicting their behaviour and reactions to situations, surrounding them. He has perfected his skills as a mentalist. That is what makes him unstoppable!
Nice job!
‘Perfected his skills as a mentalist’ LOL. I want him as a mentor.
So if we take this to a conclusion Ben wanted the call to be made. To what end? God that ‘bug eyed freak’ scares the bejesus out of me.
I guess we’ll know why he wanted the call to be made when the next season begins, Lojozz! Right now, I haven’t any speculations to offer, but perhaps someone else can weigh in on that.
Again, nice job!
Good point. I agree. He knew what he was doing. Option #3
Yeah… I hope the writers have this in hand and have got a masterplan that Ben is still working towards. It’s either that or, as I have so laboriously pointed out, he just forgot. :o)
Although did his masterplan include Locke emerging from out of the jungle chucking knives about the place? I mean, Ben’s already got an angry Jack on his case. The man he shot and left in a skeleton pit? That’s GOT to be a worry. . .
So Ben is pulling a Long Con? Sounds legitimate to me.
Ben’s world is crashing down around him. Sometimes a rookie chess player (Locke) can throw off your whole game.
I think Ben was genuinely surprised that Naomi parachuted onto the island. I think he was surprised that John killed his father (we know it was Sawyer).
He’s playing his last hand. I think he is trying to prove a point to Jack and his sheep. “See, I told you so. She’s not who you think she is.”
The Losties will team up with the Others when they realize what’s really going down.
Locke has been a tool his whole life, Ben knows that and is using him again.
Locke thinks he is doing the right thing but he is always wrong! Think about how many people he has harmed in the name of “what the island wants” or “how things are supposed to be”
If this is true then:
He knew Juliette would fall for Jack and betray him.
He knew the people he sent to the beach would die.
He knew Locke would survive the Dharma pit.
He knew Jack would make the call if he told him not to.
He knew the Looking Glass jammer would be broken.
Whilst I agree that a few of those he could have predicted, I’m struggling to understand a couple of them, especially the LG. I think personally that whilst Ben is good, he’s not infallible, and that he can’t see all ends in this.
Crap scratch that, I’ve had a thought whilst writing this! (bear in mind I haven’t rewatched S3 since it aired so my memory might not be spot on - feel free to correct.)
Juliet suddenly recalled the Looking Glass hatch. Thus forcing the Losties down to it to disrupt the Jammer. So this could mean that Ben had a hand in ensuring that Juliet would mention that and thus stop the jammer. After all Ben probably wants it to look like it “was all the Losties idea” hence why he didn’t do it himself.
This coupled with not really stopping the Losties en route to the radio tower. Now as soon as Juliet realises that the others that went to the beach weren’t all killed (not sure of the reasons for them wanting to be killed yet - greater good, know too much?) but were holding Sayid Bernard and Jin hostage, she knew she had to return to the beach to finish the job, recruiting Sawyer (and Hurley followed). Now all the losties are alive, they’ve overcome the bad guys and feel on top of the world. All it needs is a couple of “no don’t do it”s from Ben and we’ve got ourselves a call being made.
Perhaps therefore then that the “biggest danger this island has ever faced” is not what we all presumed - ie a call being made to the outside world, but the fact that we may miss the oppportunity to get in contact with the outside world.
After all, why build a runway? Because you want people to come to the island for some reason. It makes sense then that the Others want someone to come to the island, we just don’t know who. Who’s to say this ship isn’t looking for the island because Ben told it to look for them. And made sure that the jammer would be out of commision at just the right time when it was nearby, so they could pinpoint the island.
Now that would be an interesting twist.
To your question regarding why Ben would want Jack to make the call.
Very nice SP. Its Juliet that tells them about the LG
SAYID: But Naomi’s boat is only eighteen miles offshore. I know if we eliminate Danielle’s signal they will hear us.
JULIET: No they won’t.
SAYID: And why is that?
JULIET: We’re jamming it.
JACK: What?
JULIET: Ben is using one of the DHARMA stations to block all of the signals off of the Island except for ours.
SAYID: What station?
JULIET: They call it The Looking Glass.
SAYID: The Looking Glass.
JULIET: Yes, but its underwater, I have no idea where it is.
SAYID: I believe I do.
I chose #3 with a twist, Lojozz.
This is part of what Ben was writing in his diary that night: “I am, I fear, at the limit of my tactical resources. J’s (Jacob?) agenda, which I don’t question, is however a hurried and difficult one, and I could well wish we’d had time to prepare, not merely for the military strike, but for a partnered campaign in the bush. This is from Lostpedia, a blowup pic and translation of the diary.
What I think is that Naomi’s arrival signaled to Ben that there would be more coming. Another ‘faction’, I don’t know who. But it appears that Ben was considering teaming up with the Losties to fight them, but ran out of time.
So he sent most of the Others to the Temple to be safe. And a few to the beach to appear to carry out his mission. He went himself to the radio tower with Alex to turn her over to her mother and Benipulate Jack into call, setting up the Losties to take the brunt of the attack.
I know what you’re thinking. Would he sacrifice himself? I think he has another ace up his sleeve to try to save himself.
+1 for a great theory and great comments from all.
I’m all about choice #3 as well. Ben not having Tom kill Jin, Sayid, and Bernard…..yet still making it look like he did…..tells me he was making sure Jack didn’t listen to him, not only so Jack would call the freighter, but also so he could pull an “I told you so” with Jack at a later time.
YAE excellent you just put the point very sucsinctley (probably bad spelling sorry). Why give the order not to kill the 3
