Ok, here we go. If we are to believe that they [at least Jack and Kate] got off the island based on the flash forwards in the season 3 finale, it was not on the boat that Jack made contact with on the satellite phone.
If you notice in the flashes, Jack is distraught, disheveled, drunk and wants nothing more than to get back on the island, even taking flights hoping that the plane will crash on the island. And if you take notice of the scene at his home, you will see that he even has many nautical and geographic maps and books open at his home. This is presumably an effort to locate the island. BUT, if you think about, the boat that Naomi originated from would, by any assumption, have computerized mapping systems and logs to note exactly where they are in the ocean. They even have the exact location of the island because Jack asked the person on the other end of the phone if they can get the coordinates to their location from the satellite phone and the guy on the other end says, “Yes”.
So, if they can find the location of the phone from satellites coordinates, then they would have the exact coordinates of the island. Even if by some reason, they couldn’t log the exact coordinates due the magnetic abnormalities of the island, they would at least have the boats last coordinates when they were approximately 80 miles off the island, right? Well, if they can locate the island from the phone, and have their location when they are 80 miles off the island, why can’t Jack find the island? The reason is, is that they boat which is supposed to be reaching them does not pick them up, or doesn’t not make it back to any other inhabited land. Because if it did, they would know exactly where the island is and Jack would be able to go back whenever he wants, right!

I agree, in fact I would venture a guess that something will happen in the beginning of Season 4 that will lead to the destruction of the boat, continuing the Losties being stuck on teh island with no contact to the outside. Maybe Dharma fires a missile at it??
I agree I think the guys on the Boat are the Bad guys Ben has referred to so many times in the past, I think season 4 may see the losties and te others coming together to fight an invading force. This of course will be completely Jacks fault. I also see Jack and Ben’s leadership being questioned by all and locke ultimatley taking control with Jacob as his Director.
i think its dharma in the boat.
also. i know 80 miles is a long way, but surely it would be see able if your on an ocean?
Plus they are apparently going up to a series 5. Why have 2 series where they are off island.
That could be right…. I don’t know about the guys on the boat, but maybe the signal on Naomie’s phone was intercepted by the Others to fool them. Benjamin is wise and he had a very strange look at Jack when the guys said they could find them…
I agree. You make very valid points. I have to assume that John Locke will play a hand in detroying the boat before it reaches them much like the submarine (although I still think he may not have really “blown it up”)
I would tend to agree, lostsemiotic.
I don’t think DHARMA is on the boat.
Would’t they already know the location of their island?
The people on the boat are “bad guys.” They probably take Jack, Kate, and presumably others off the island by force. The “bad guys” do know the location of the island now — but why would they share that with Jack, especially if he wants to go back and presumably help correct the problems he caused by leading them to the island to begin with?
