Alright. I have just thought about this, and I now posting it. I am very interested in there being an open dialouge surounding these ideas, and very comfortable with critisim. If you want to tell me I am not cool enough to be writing LOST theories, don’t hesitiate.
There could very well be tons of problems with this theory. Debunk it, and point it out.
Reading most of the theories currently on this website, it appears that it is almost an accepted belief that the smoke monster is in some way affliated with the others. Some say that it is jacob. That the “ghosts” seen on the island are actually the smoke monster “testing” (or whatever) the island inhabitants. That it is working for Jacob, whatever.
I honnestly have no idea, but really like those theories, and believe much of them myself. I just think it is always key to look at how something is first described. Danielle refered to it as a security system. But whos?
For this theory I will go along with the assumption that the ghosts are the smoke monster. This means that the smoke monster saved Ben, when his mother told him it wasn’t time yet. Why would the smoke monster do this? Perhaps it knew that Ben would one day help the island.
Now the only other encounter I can remember with the smoke monster encountering the others is with Kate and Juliet. The first time they saw the smoke monster it seemed to take flashes of her mind. Juliet’s mind. Kate did not seem to be effected. If the smoke monster was “testing” someone, it seems that it was Juliet. And clearly she failed.
Later on that day the smoke monster full on attacks Juliet and kate and Juliet must use the sonar fence or whatever. Why would the monster attack again so shortly after?
Perhaps the smoke monster saw that Juliet was going to betray the others and planned to stop her. (Of course the smoke monster could have seen anything, we do not know what Juliet is up to. She is a liar, and liars always lie)
But LOST is also leading us to believe that Ben is not leading them the way Jacob would want them to be lead.
I see Juliet’s betrayal hurting Ben more than anyone. And I do not see Jacob trying to help Ben. But I cannot see Ben controlling the smoke monster…….
As Danielle refered to it, it is the security system of the island. I like the idea of the personified island, and i like the idea that this monster protects it.
Has everyone who has been killed by the smoke monster previously put the island in danger? I don’t know, but I am about to check. I remember Locke was almost killed by it twice. Was Jacob testing him, or were some of Locke’s ideas dangerous to the island?
Clearly there are a lot of holes in this theory and it relies on lots of assumptions. I really just want people’s feedback to help me work this out in my head.

Um…I have never had a theory about it, but I will make a guess right here.
The smoke monster seems to either choose to simply kill people (like in the first episode of season 1), or it confronts them. In the smoke we see memories, often painful ones from someone’s past.
These are hard things for someone to deal with seem “monsterous”. People run and hide from their past. It is scary as hell.
But sooner or later your past will catch up with you and if you cannot confront it, it will destroy you .
The losties are hiding their pasts from most of the other losties, because they are scared, ashamed, and running from them. But in reality, they are just memories. Big mechanical sounds, ending up being smoke. But memories can hurt you and so can the smoke monster.
