This theory is based on Future and past seeing abilities of Desmond, Mikhail and Smoky/Jacob, maybe not time travel after all! by MrAlpert. You may wish to read it before continuing.
One could draw the conclusion that the Smokey Monster may allow someone to view the events of the island, although separated by space or time.

The post by MrAlpert and the subsequent string that follows is very insightful. The observation is made that there is always a flash of light before Desmond sees a vision of the future. He then states that it may have little or nothing to do with physical time travel.
As I watched the Smokey Monster flash before Juliette and Kate, it ocurred to me that it may be the release of photons. When I looked up photons and time travel, I discovered that photons theoretically travel through time instantly and do not obey the laws of space. There is debate of the logic. Why don’t we see the light from a distant star instantaneously, for example?
What is interesting to note, is that the release of photons may be aiding in one’s mental ability to view the future or past. One could draw the conclusion that the Smokey Monster may allow someone to view the events of the island, although separated by space or time.
I’m not sure if this has been commented on in the past, but I found it to be an excellent observation by MrAlpert and the others in that particular post. It gives excellent insight into how the visions and projections may be happening, and could be something to watch for as another purpose for the Smokey Monster.

Top research! Its a simple idea that would be believable to the majority that we don’t see the light of a star straight away.
Some of the stars we are looking at now are in the past as they don’t exist anymore. Throw in the speed of light and there you have it but it might get too complicated.
However with Desmond and Co being electromagnetised could allow them to receive or see this photons.
It’s a good theory but again it’s very complicated in its simplicity… We have to think average viewer here. We may comprehend these theories but not everyone can.
The flashes of light from the monster could be its way of reading into a persons thoughts thats all. (then again it could be just taking Polaroids of two hot chicks covered in mud… Wouldn’t you? {place sound of crickets here}). In any case, the lights and the sounds it made led me to believe that it could actually be man made.
Sorry for the corny horny jokes i make sometimes… I’m just crazy that way.
NowImLost- See, I don’t agree with you on the complication issue. Wormholes and time travel are complicated issues too, but they’ve been in tons of movies and tv series. ER has complicated medical terminology and procedures, but people loved it. Are they using fake medical terms and procedures? I bet most of it is grounded in true procedure. CSI is grounded in real investigative techniques.
I’m not saying that when they explain it in the tv series that they will sound like the scientists in that article that I posted. But I believe the show is based on real science. Fractal geometry and general relativity seem to be at the heart of it. Nanotechnology could be too. These are relatively new ideas that they will be butchering in scifi movies for decades to come.
For the photons, the show may just give a general explanation that light flashes help the future visions. For fractal geometry, they may state that a new geometry developed with the usage of computers that allowed for new scientific breakthroughs. But to figure LOST out at this stage, you have to understand the real scientific theories that they are basing the series on.
Sci Fi people like real science, not those cheesy explanations for how they stepped into a closet and were transferred to the land of the dinosaurs. The drama lovers just want to know what is happening to these characters that they like now. They want to know if Jack and Kate are going to get together. Where are they? Will they get off this island? A reasonable explanation and casual mention of science and math will be good enough. Then we’re all happy.
I can’t think of another tv series that I would consider “interactive” like this one. They have websites with clues set up. There are forums like this all over the web. The intent is to make it difficult to figure out, to raise questions. People are blowing up newspaper clippings to read them. What book is on that table? Before Walt showed up, what did the voices say to Locke as the music was fading? I go to work and everyone that watches it is trying to figure it out or they are craving for someone to give them answers. It gets talked about during the week, not just on Thursdays. And we are overanalyzing everything. But what a thought provoking series.
So if it turns out that smokey was taking pictures of hot chicks covered in mud, I’ll understand. But then I’ll come up with a theory as to why he didn’t use a video camera instead. ;)
I for one can tell you that ER is right on the money with its terminology and procedures. I work in the medical field and I am always amazed at the content of their show. You are right, I never really thought about it. I have no idea what is going on on Lost, but, unlike the rocket scientists who understand this show, I am able to understand ER. Really good comparison!!! I like it.
