why were Horace and Olivia driving around in a convertible with the roof down in the middle of winter?!?!

— solarchap

This is a question as opposed to a theory.

I have just watched ‘The man behind the curtain’ again and a thought popped in my head…..Ben’s Birthday is past the middle of December and he is born 32 miles near Portland, Oregon…

I live in London where it’s always freezing in December, and I imagine it isn’t that different in Portland.

So why go hiking in the woods pregnant at that time of year? and wouldn’t you either wear more layers of clothes or something more appropriate for the season?

Maybe there is an explanation for the clothing, but further, why were Horace and Olivia driving around in a convertible with the roof down in the middle of winter?!?!

As I say, this is a question not a theory, so any explanations out there?

Someone posted before that Dec. 22 1964 in Portland Oregon was 60 degrees. This would be close to the right date.

Also, there are many other Portlands other that Portland Oregon. Could be in a warmer place.

Personally I think it was just a medium to make the story interesting. obviously we were supposed to THINK in the first seconds of the show that the man and the pregnant woman were on “the island” - being surrounded by all that wildlife - it was just so that we’d have a little “Ohhhhhh” moment when they stepped out on the street.

70 degrees at Christmas! We’re lucky if we get that in the summer over here!

That is a very good observation. I had not really thought about it but now that you mention it, I did not get the feeling from the surrounding woods that it was anywhere near December. Even if there was no snow or the temperature was not freezing, the vegitation would still have looked like winter. Something to think about. He lied about being born on the island, so maybe he is lieing or was lied to about when he was born.

Yeah, I noticed that also, solarship. I’m thinking they were near Portland, Texas. Not the same Portland that Juliet was going to be taken to.

Why would they be in Texas?

And, wasn’t the area mountainous? The area around Corpus Christi and the Portland area of Texas is very, VERY flat. Nothing but oil fields all the way to the ocean.

Prof, You’ll have to excuse my geographical knowledge,I didn’t know there was a Portland in Texas; England is so small we only have one of everything!

I assumed it was Oregon and thought well it’s on the same sort of latitude, but even if it was Oregon, in line with what lhuntercmt was saying, I just thought there would be a more wintery feel to it all.

If it’s a wintery feel anyone ever needs, just visit us in England, it’s the end of may and I’ve got my central heating on full.

    :-)
