Since Season one, the relationship between Kate and her pursuer has bothered me. It never seemed to fit. Or if it did fit, it was not to the mould of fleeing convict and noble law enforcement official.
I don’t claim to have an underlying theory—I leave that to the academics—and instead I’m going to make a couple of huge leaps of logic here. First, I must digress slightly: with all this talk of flash-fowards and such, my mind has been churning. As I’ve stated previously on this site, I have not in fact watched any of season three yet(I’m in a non-broadcast country and waiting for dvd) but have read synopsis and listened to the podcasts..I think this has allowed me a certain level of objectivity in viewing the series as a whole(combined with frequent re-viewings of seasons 1 and 2) which having viewed the latest twist would have blinded me to. I’ve read countless theories on here regarding time and human conceptions of it, alternate universes, and parallel existences. Notwithstanding all this, it is not uncommon to talk about Lost as existing in a single plane of reality; it is not uncommon to talk of Lost as existing on a linear time frame(not uncommon, not universal either O3). So the last episode is a flashforward? Why? ‘Jack has a “new” phone’, you cry; ‘He talks about the island!’, you bleat; So? Things are, evidently, not as they seem. And now I return to my original point: Edward Mars and Kate. Kate is a character that while at once resigned to her fate is also struggling against it. This is represented in her relationship with Ed. Not just that, however: Ed and Kate have a rapport that seems to transcend the boundaries of their apparently limited engagements…might their relationship itself by symptomatic of the Island’s problem. That is, might it be an LP stuck on a scratched run waiting for someone to set shunt the machine?
