Anything can happen if you can choose between alternate realities.

Here is my theory: the famous equation discovered in the 60s gives access to parallel universes or realities. As scientists conclude that in our Mainline Universe the human race will self destruct, the Dharma initiative tries to change the Mainline by selecting an alternate Universe in which war poverty and famine do not exist. Dharma tries to suppress all other alternate possibilities, including the alternate Universe from where the Others are coming (which would explain why the Others were particularly unhappy with Dharma). The island does not exist in any of the man inhabited alternate realities. That’s why no one can find it and save the lost people. But provided specific procedures, it is possible to travel from Alternate realities to the Island and from the Island to other alternate possible realities.
All this could mean that: - the island is the battlefield between potential alternate realities. Dharma wanted to use it to “select” a “love and peace” universe but the Others have annihilated the Dahrma people before they have learned how to impose their choice of an alternate reality. - The Others try to keep the island hidden to prevent people from alternate realities to come and change the Mainline. - Naomi comes from such an alternate reality in which the flight 815 had crashed and everyone’s body was found dead. Naomi’s people could be looking to impose their reality on the island which would explain why Ben is afraid that everyone would die. - Jack and Kate in the flashforward are in an Alternate reality in which Jack’s father is not dead, Kate is not a fugitive, Charlie still writes music, etc… - People dead on the island could re-appear if they come again from another alternate reality. - Some people could coexist in several realities at the same time like the kid who can be in different places at the same time. - Children cannot be born on the island because the island is not part of any specific human alternate universe. People can come to the island only if they already exist in some alternate reality. - The black cloud is a being from the non-human alternate reality in which the island is located. Humans see it as a “cloud of probability” because that being does not exist in any of the human alternate realities and therefore it has no shape and all shapes. - To push this further, one could speculate that all the flashbacks that we’ve seen are coming from alternate realities. In one universe Jack may be Claire’s brother, in others he may be not, in one reality Charlie is a rock star in another he’s homeless playing in the streets, and so on. It’s easy to speculate that whatever two characters you choose there is at least one alternate reality in which they are connected (and many more alternate realities in which they are not) - The threat that the button un-pushed will end the world is true. When the button was not pushed one alternate reality was destroyed which gave Desmond the capacity of seeing alternate realities.
That’s it. My theory does not explain everything but it’s fun to consider. Enjoy.

I don’t know how this might play out in the grand scheme of things, but you have explained it well and I like it a lot!
Very interesting that one brother. But I think its a bit too intellectual for the general no brainer watching the show. Some people can just about understand the flashbacks
