First of all, there are so many great theories on this site. Very thought-provoking! Here is what I am currently thinking. This idea came to me while walking last night, and I like it much better than the theory I posted last Friday that focused on time-travel.
It’s not about people being able to time-travel. It’s about people being either Receivers or Transmitters. A Receiver is someone that can receive psychic messages, or those that have visions. People that immediately come to mind are: 1) John 2) Desmond 3) Kate (remember the horse?) 4) Ben (he can see/hear Jacob) 5) Shannon 6) Jack (he saw his dead father) 7) Mr. Eko (he saw his brother) 8) Who am I missing? Help me out, please.
Transmitters are people that can send psychic messages. These people can communicate with receivers. These people include: 1) Walt 2) Boone (he has appeared in several visions) 3) Jacob 4) Who else? I know I’m missing someone.
I think that the island enhances people’s psychic abilities. When these people are in the “real world”, they would not be able to recognize their abilities. When they are on the island, they suddenly find those abilities enhanced. Not everyone can be a receiver or a transmitter, or maybe they can but it’s all about realizing their potential or reaching their enlightenment (as surmised by others on here. I’m sorry- there is a great theory out there that discusses this but I can’t recall it at the moment.) As people evolve on the island and clear their minds, they start to realize their potential. John is the best example to follow. Remember in season 1 when he met Smokey? I believe he learned then all about his potential- that he received messages and knew what he needed to do. He has been a man working towards a mission ever since- a mission that others can’t see- but obviously John is working with information that the rest of the folks simply don’t have. John has been so calm in the face of many disasters- and he is calm because he has knowledge.
So, how does Ben know who is special? He knew Walt was special- they had him tagged from the get-go. Ben is a receiver. That’s how he knows.
I love the theory posed by WilliamWonka and others that Jack is Jacob. The Jack we see right now (present and future from The Looking Glass) is nowhere near his potential. If Jack is Jacob (and I think that’s a good possibility, but so is Locke as Jacob), then it is a Jack from far in the future. An old Jack. A tired Jack, running out of time and options. He is trying to communicate with certain receivers in the past in order to re-write history and give himself (and everyone else) an alternate (and better) reality.
I will admit that I was thinking along the lines of time travel for quite sometime, but now I think psychic abilities crossing timelines is more interesting. People aren’t actually traveling back in time, but they can communicate back into time. Jacob really isn’t sitting in the chair. He is projecting himself into the past. This all ties into the theory by dabiatchishere about Smokey being a Tulpa. It’s all about mind power- the evolution of thoughts manifesting themselves into something more. And by being able to send (or receive) messages, the past/present/future can be altered. I still believe we will be seeing many flash-fowards, with the story line changing as messages are sent/received. It will be interesting!
P.S. It would take me forever to pull out all the related episodes, so I’ll just say any episode with a vision in it would be included!

jack is not jacob –see Jack/Jacob Flaw post
Okay, I’ll revise. I just came in from spreading mulch outside (as you can see, I do my best thinking while doing physical labor!!). I think that it probably isn’t possible for someone to be both a receiver and a transmitter. Jack has already seen his dad, so he cannot be a transmitter, and cannot be Jacob. Same with Locke- he has already been a receiver.
Overall, though, PSmith, I like the direction you’re going here. Well done!
I like this idea as well. Good thought!
PSmith: Very good thoughts, overall! And thanks so much for the shout out!
If that is the case, why Locke blow everything up? The hatch, the sub, the flame…
If you listen to the last podcast. Darlton explains which vision was what. Like if bens mom was aspiration, illisuion or smoky. So on and so on. They answered everyone. Boone, Dave, Jacks dad, ect
