I am a person who can’t type. But thanks to the collective consciousness of LostTheories.com fans, my fingers are able to move the keys at 130 words per minute. Give or take 100 wpm. Also, I type this tomorrow, but was able to travel into the past and steal the ideas of some other genius who thought of The Ultimate Lost Theory and post it today. So remember, I know how you vote before you know.
Hans O. discovered electromagnetism in 1820. In 1999 the ‘Oersted’ satellite was launched with the purpose of charting Earth’s magnetic field. The findings led scientists to believe that there might be a polar reversal imminent, the effects of which could be cataclysmic: if Earth were to lose its magnetosphere, it would be vulnerable to massive radiation from the space/sun. The satellite also revealed an anomaly in the magnetic field under Southern Africa; it is pointing the opposite direction from the rest of the Earth’s field and has been growing for hundreds of years.
Hannes Alfvén: His contribution to science - mainly in the field of electromagnetism - revolutionized how scientists view the universe, winning a Nobel Prize on the way. He spoke English, German, French, Russian, and some Spanish and Chinese; and studied oriental philosophy and religion. He spent time in the Fiji Islands. He was fascinated by the “green flash” - a phenomenon that sometimes occurs at sunset. By no coincidence (Green Lantern and Flash comic):
Alfvén plus Hans O. equals Alvar Hanso.
While on the island, some of the members of the Dharma Initiative began to experience a collective consciousness with inhabitants of the island. The collective consciousness is that group of scientists that became so totally absorbed into remote viewing and electromagnetism that they now operate on frequencies of electromagnetism (covering everything from light to sound) only. They can read minds as well as manipulate iron and other conductive material. Claire wondered why there was not one comb or hairbrush on the entire plane; the reason: the slight electrostatic charges that hairbrushing creates is interference for the collective consciousness.
The scientists feared the cataclysmic events of a polar reversal and prepared an environment for the survival of the human race. They searched for the kind of people who would make up a community fit for survival and propagation of a new world. In the main, this means characters without father/mother figures; and/or characters with skills for survival: a doctor, an engineer, a survivalist, a mercenary; and characters of sufficiently varied genetic background: african, caucasian, asian, etc. to ensure a healthy gene pool for generations. Also, there seemed to be a link between the amount of adversity in one’s life and the ability to assimilate into the collective consciousness.
Somewhere along the Dharma Initiative timeline, the collective consciousness seized total control of the project. The goal was to create a utopian society that thought as ONE. Namaste! Everyone within the sphere of the collective dawned a gas mask one day, everyone else died.
BF Skinner’s dubious theories form the basis for the methods used by collective consciousness to socially engineer this ‘utopia’. They are the voices in the trees, they are the visions, they are the black fog (metal in a magnetic field), the monster. They use every psychological trick in his books to manipulate the survivors into forming a stable long-lasting community ON the island; and their means to this end are extensive. The cage that Sawyer was in is a BF Skinner creation.
When all the candidates were in place, i.e. on the plane, the collective consciousness knocked everyone out. A real flight was exploded in the air near their location. Ben sent cohorts out to each end of the island because “there may be survivors”. They made a list of names and compared it to their list of candidates. The real survivors could not be allowed to intermingle with the candidates who were awakened among the wreckage. Any person not on the list of candidates was dragged off into the night.
The collective is referred to as “the island”. When John Locke states that “the island smiled at me”, he is speaking of a human entity. Notice that many references to the island are as if it were a living entity. His ability to walk comes from “the island”. He can’t send a signal to his legs to walk because his spinal cord is severed, but the collective sends the signal. Locke has become more in tune with the collective. Perhaps Ben did not shoot him because Locke challenges his authority. Perhaps he knows Locke will learn this secret of the island if he shoots him. Walt comes to Locke in a vision and tells him he can walk. He arises and walks. Locke has passed the test.
There are others who are searching for this island. It’s location has been kept relatively secret because whoever controls the island, controls the future. An artificial magnetosphere conceals it visually. Any craft coming in the vicinity will be averted by the constant movements of their compass. A hot air balloon may bump right into it though. When a magnetic anomally is detected, the search is on to find the island. Enter Naomi.
And what about the flash forward? Could this be generated by the collective to show Jack a vision of his future if he leads “his people” off the island? He will now have to decide whether to heed the visions or be “rescued” by Naomi’s boat.

Maybe you can’t type, but you’re good at “cut and paste!”
nice. It could work and it would probably make the general public happier then if it was something on the trial of time travel, etc.
I meant to write trail. ugh… Im the one who cant type. =)
Ha! Exactly Barry. No need to reinvent the wheel. This theory worked nearly 1 1/2 years ago. Wish I had thought of it. I have mentioned in both of my posts that the idea is not mine. Some people have never read it though, and new events make it time for the theory to time travel in a slightly altered state. It may make LOST more enjoyable to watch for someone.
I also like Steve Wynn’s theory on the Gedanken Experiment. Someone may read this post and alter it again to make a better theory. Or better yet, someone could debunk the theory once and for all and change my thought process.
If you go back to the site you stole the theory from and actually bother to read the ENTIRE thread you might realize that the theory has already been debunked by the author (the REAL author I mean of course) himself a long time ago.
Why would any of us bother to argue about a theory that has been coped and pasted from another site.
Too bad you couldn’t have copied and pasted the pictures, too.
OK Maik. Point out the area of my post that has been debunked. You can even quote the REAL author if you’d like. Unlike you, I have no objections to this if you give them credit. Maybe you should have read mine and realized that it has been revised by me AND all the credit for the original framework went to the original author. Or, you could just announce to everyone that time travel, electromagnetivity, and all death scenario ideas have been copyrighted by other authors and should not be built upon.
According to this theory, the real survivors were dragged away into the night and presumably killed. But what about the fact that we have no evidence that the Others killed any survivors until later in the game. The kids, the flight attendent and others were seen at the Others’ camp months after the crash.
nice work Hanso!
