My theory is that Lost is all about String Theory, that parallel universes exist side by side. Meaning that people are the same but events change in each universe. So someone dies in one universe but continue to live on in another. So karma or cosmic destiny is ultimately a decision to choose a path in your universe, which may be unlike your parallel self in a coexisting universe. One thing affects another, etc…
I have been thinking String Theory since I heard Lost wasn’t about pergatory, but after tonight’s episode (May 23, 2007), it seems to make sense.
The characters are said to be dead by the girl who parachuted onto the island. There is a preview into the future between the Jack and Kate characters, coupled with Locke’s refusal to kill, despite dire consequences and his warning to Jack that this isn’t what you are supposed to do-finally made me think this has to be it.
As for the magnetic north thing and the island being hidden, it is sort of a competition for power. I am dabbling with the idea that since magnetic north changes every so often in the earth’s history, and we are coming upon that in the earth’s cycle, that somehow these science guys discovered that the island would be a portal to parallel universes and that power over that portal would mean power over destiny. Changing history and that kind of thing.
Oh, and possibly corporate take over of the universe. Forgive me if I simply repeated someone else’s theory or I missed key elements. I have missed several episodes over this season.

I’m relatively new to this site so i’m sorry if this has already been discussed but am I the only one who thinks the plane discovery could be a cover-up by Dharma or “The Others”. I think all the talk about alternate dimensions and time dilation and what not is too in-depth and scientific. Not everybody is as smart as most people that post on this site and if the ending season to Lost is too scientific it will lose a lot of viewers.
After this episode, I thought about the string theory as well and this island being a convergence of infinite realities.
I believe that Jacks desire to return back to the island is his realization that he and the survivors do not belong in that reality to which they have returned to (supposedly, their plane had crashed and was found with no survivors).
Going back to Hugo’s experience with “the numbers” where he experiences misfortune because of his implantation of them in the lottery. The origin of the numbers came from the island which is supposed to be isolated from the world and it’s various outcomes. But when a particular reality is introduced to a pollutant from the island (the numbers, the survivors…whatever), chaos ensues. Hence Jack’s attempt at suicide causing the car accident. Jack may have been experiencing these misfortunes ever since his rescue from the island.
Unfortunately, I think this theme is a bit too complicated for your average Lost viewer and the world would riot as a result of such a far fetched conclusion to the series.
I posted a similar theory a couple of weeks ago. I won’t rewrite the whole thing here, but I worked in a possible reason for the button pressing in the hatch and stuff. Take a look: http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/may/17/theory-everything/
