Funeral Parlor scene? Sorry if I’m doing this wrong, it is my first post.

I just rewatched the scene of Jack at the funeral parlor again and again (free on abc.com) and I also think that he distinctly says “Either” to the Funeral Director’s question about “friend or family?” ALSO, (I just caught this, so sorry if this is old news to everyone else) Jack then goes up to the casket, puts his hand on it, takes out his pill bottle. There is one pill left. just before he downs the final pill he says under his breath “You’re not dead” and takes the pill. Whaa? I’ve read all the posts today and don’t remember any mention of this thus far. Please speculate…

Ok… this is a LONG shot… What if it is “Jack”? Some sort of fake death cover up… could explain why Kate asked “Why would I go?” as if the answer was obvious. Also could explain why Jack didn’t want the coffin open. I know the coffin is a little short for Jack, but did you notice the heels on his shoes when he climbed up the bridge? … Way out in left field, but then again… so is this show :p This even goes against my theory… lol

One more thing…. The man who died did so in New York… but as far as we can tell… jack goes to the funeral in LA… did I miss something here?

No you did not miss anything. I think a lot of people are seeing the funeral scene which does take place in california and also seeing the newspaper article, not an obituary and assuming that they are connected when in fact they are not. The newspaper article is from the L.A Times but speaks of a man who died in New York.

What I think, and this goes along with my theory, at least my theory as of last nights episode is just what Ben said “Everyone on the island will die.” I think the reason that Jack wants to go back to the island so bad is because he knows that if he doesn’t go back then he will die. I think the person in the coffin is most defenitely someone from the Losties crew and the man who died in New York is also from the Losties crew. I think one by one everyone is dying and Jack knows it and he is realizing that leaving the island was a mistake to begin with. Those are my thoughts.

i rewatched the video and im almost positive that he says “dammit” refering to the last pill not “you’re not dead”.

I think the article and the funeral are related. As jack is driving to the funeral home he pulls out the article as to check for the address. And in fact what we saw at the funeral home was a viewing that no one went to, not the funeral itself. At the end with Jack and Kate, Jack asks if she is GOING to the funeral, not if she went. Maybe not a significant point, but one that seems to have been missed (me included till I watched again). And I also listened for “neither” vs “either” and I’m place my bet that he said neither.

true the newspaper article is from the LA Times, and it is from April 5, 2007…so that would either make this a definite flash forward or an incontinuity…but I think it is about a man who is living in LA (died in LA) and from NY…that is the only way Jack could go to the funeral in LA. I think the funeral home and the newspaper article are definitely related. I did not catch Jack asking Kate if she is GOING (future tense) to the funeral…I’ll have to watch again. I also really think he says three syllables before he takes the last pill. If so, he couldn’t have said “dammit”…but any other theories?

Just watched the funeral home scene again, sounded like dammit to me….and it seemed it was because it was the last pill, not about whoever was in the casket. And I just noticed that it was a very small casket. But going back to the point about it not being the funeral, the man at the funeral home, after Jack asked if the funeral was over, said there was no funeral, only a viewing, no one showed up. Viewings normally happen before a funeral and sometimes days before meaning people could still show up for the funeral.

John Locke was born in California and raised in foster care.

It could explain why nobody attended the funeral.

A trivial point but the casket only looked small when Jack was right in front of it, when he walks away from it the perspective is a little different and it looks like a “normal” sized adult casket.

Lets say the casket is smallish though. Maybe locke has his legs ampuated due to complications from leaving the island so the casket can be smaller.

As far as the “either/neither” thing goes, I thought he said “either” too, but I could be mistaken. Just to let you know though, you’re not alone. I guess we’ll have to wait until it’s subtitled on DVD.

He does clearly say EITHER, but he says dammit with the pill bottle.
