Basically I believe that what we saw as Jack’s flash forwards were actually premonitions seen by Locke through the help of Walt.

I beleive that this flash forward was actually the future of Jack as seen by Locke with the help of Walt if the rescuers were to come. Walt somehow shows Locke how bad life ends up for Jack once he (and whoever else) gets off the island and how much he wants to get back (for whatever reason) so Locke makes it his goal to try and prevent this from happening. From the beginning of this series a point has been made to show how important and special Walt is so it would hardly be a suprise if Walt has a higher role to play in what is going to happen and not only does he encourage Locke to get out of the pit but he sends him on a mission to prevent Jack’s lousy future if he where to be saved. At the end of the finale I believe Locke leaves the area where the losties are waiting to be rescued so in order to retrieve weapons to ensure that either the helicopter doesnt land, doesnt take off, or is blown up on takeoff. Desmond says he sees Claire and the baby get on the helicopter thus I believe Locke may shoot the helicopter once it leaves the ground with who knows who. Locke is already not seen in a great light by the losties so I believe he may be seen as a bad guy although he is trying to be good next season. I believe that we do not see who is in the coffin just because in the context of Locke seeing into the future it doesnt matter it just symbolizes the struggles that Jack is going through. Also I believe that this will lead into next season where Walt will have a much more active role and we may get more insight into his ‘abilities’.

I wondered about something like this, but I can’t figure out why Locke didn’t just shoot Jack, if all of that is the case.

You could be right about the premonitions. And they may not even be Locke’s.

Good theory. I like this one too. Prof, someone else stated that everyone has free will, so he had to let Jack make the choice. Maybe that is why he did not shoot him. But then, that would not explain why he shot Naomi.
