You do remember birthdays, don’t you?” says Ben to Richard.

— HappyAtheist

Why does Ben have Birthdays and Richard not? Why has Ben aged and Richard not?

How is this related to their positions in the power hierarchy?

Well, HA, my theory is that Richard has aged. The “Richard” we see in the jungle talking to Ben is actually Richard’s father, Jacob.

I think Ben asked Richard about birthdays because the Others don’t typically celebrate them, even though Ben’s birthday is very important to him. In a way, he killed his father because Roger never remembered his birthday.

I realize that it’s reasonable to assume that the reason Ben asked that was because Richard has stopped counting birthdays since he’s so old without aging. Maybe we can presume that Ben was taking a jealous dig at Richard even. But… I’m going to stay out on my limb and say that Richard isn’t some kind of immortal and Jacob is his father.

If I’m wrong, then… well, at least I lived dangerously! :-D

ProfOzone: I had the same thought when I first saw Richard take off the gas mask—that he was the son of the man that Ben had spoken to in the woods. One thing that really struck me for some reason was the fact that Richard was clean-shaven, whereas the man in the woods had a beard. I realize that he easily could have shaved it off, but it just made him look so much younger, and entirely different. I also considered the possibility that this older man (if there are indeed two different men) could have become Jacob. However, it is hard for me to make up my mind, because several things point to Richard having been on the island for a very long time. In addition to the birthday comment that has been mentioned, there is the comment that Richard makes to Locke (no matter how long you are on the island, you never tire of the view). Also, there is the whole presumption that it would have been impossible for Richard to be conceived and delivered on the island. Regarding the original theory, I’m still somewhat confused about the power relationship between Ben and Richard. I was at first under the impression that Richard was behind the massacre of the Dharma members, but then on last night’s season 3 recap, the producers said that Ben led this attack. Another interesting thing to keep in mind is the fact that it was Richard and Ethan who traveled to the mainland to do all of the recruiting, at least in Juliette’s case; she did not meet Ben until she reached the island. This could indicate that Ben was too important to go and do these things himself, or that Richard did not trust anyone else with the job.

Very interesting. I think that it is amazing that Ben is leader over Richard….well who we think was Richard when Ben first escaped into the woods. What if there are two Richards…I must say that I dont think so really, but excellent thought. It would explain why Ben is in charge. I was confused as hell during that episode. The entire Ben being a leader did not make any sense. Richard in the woods did seem very interested when Ben told him he sees his mother and his mother led him to the woods. Perhaps this made Richard think Ben was special because Richard was really looking for someone that could see Jacob. Then maybe Richard took Ben to see Jacob, and Ben did his usual lying and role playing. That may explain why in the last episode Richard seemed to be very interested in if Locke saw Jacob (Someone posted something on that comment about Richards interest…but I cant remember who).

Whoa Prof, I never thought about the earier “Richard” being Jacob rather than Richard. That is a whole hell of a lot more plausable than Richard being imortal. Yeah… hell yeah.

No ProfOzone, i don’t think so, in Lost, when they need to make older a character, they always take the same actor, like Ben’s Father. Why would Nestor Carbonell play Richard and Jacob ?

I still think that the flash of Jacob looked like an older version of the guy that brought Ben’s dad (Roger) to the island. Watch that episode again and look at the guys hair…and the hair of the Jacob flash in the chair. Also check out his eyes before they got to the island, he had no glasses on then. Even the quick flash of the eye looked liked the eye of that guy (I cannot remember his name for the life of me). Even though there is no proof that the eye seen was that of Jacob. It damn sure was not the eye of Locke or Ben. Wasnt the eye of Richard either. I only think Richard knows of Jacob. I dont think they are related. When they tell us more about Richard, so many secrets will be revealed.

Zed, I hear ya. But, my friend… it’s TV. :-) It wouldn’t be the first time that some show has used the same actor for father and son, and besides that… am I the only person here who has known sons that look just like their fathers? It really isn’t that unusual, in my experience.

And anyway, I think they did a few things to make sure they didn’t look exactly alike. The guy in the jungle seemed to have a bit darker complexion… there were subtle differences. And I thought “the Richard” who took his gas mask off looked a little younger than the man in the jungle did.

But, as I’ve said… I’m just going out on a limb. Taking a stab in the dark. I could be wrong. Who knows?

I think he was actually threatening Richard and to beware what he is capable of doing.

HA: did you know that there was an Alpert, Widemore and Hanso on the Black Rock?

I saluted you in forming my own theory of LOST. I would be interested in your opinion of my view of how events:
