Smokie is an important point in the long lists of unexplained weird stuff happening on the island. The smoke is not an illusion, it can drag things, interact with matter, so it’s not a gas,and it’s not a liquid. It must be made of metal, or a similar solid substance. It also seems to have a part that goes underground, like a worm. It can also change shapes and, being solid, the only way to do explain this is to think the solid part is coated by the smoke substance.
I’ve thought about it and found an explanation that seems to fit. I think of the smoke monster as some kind of electronic shark, with a fin coming out of the ground. Another analogy is a submarine with it’s periscope emerging above the ground level. This portion that emerges may also be small, but it can work as an antenna. It’s function is to generate a cascade of sensory stimuli (primarily acoustic, but probably also visual) designed to evoke a particular shape. More specifically, the antenna emits electromagnetic impulses that our brain processes as visual and acoustic information. It’s default shape is an amorphous smoke cloud. This is also why, anyway, any shape it picks is kind of blurry and monochromatic, it would be very complicated to evoke a colored high-fi image. If required, a mechanical arm can emerge above the ground level to interact with objects or persons, but it appears to us covered in smoke by the stimuli generated by the antenna. I can also imagine the smoke having pre-recorded “wave files” that allow him to pick a veriety of basic shapes and sounds. I think the vivid shapes of dead people (like Emi) are a different kind of manifestation of the smoke monster. Those visions are induced by the smoke monster playing with peoples minds. When people are having flashbacks in the show it is the smoke monster that is making them tell him their past. The smoke then borrows a memory of a dear person and “dresses” it, making you see that person were the smoke monster wants to.
Of all the theories i can come out with about the smoke monster this one looks like the best for me…I don’t think it is exactly the way it works on the show, but i do think there might be something like this going on. Do you have any different ideas about the smoke? *
Its good one question though. Why did it not just pop under the fence ?
