It is true that we don’t know what the smoke monster is as of yet. It could be mini-nanobots (the producers said it wasn’t A nanobot, not several mini-nanobots. It could even be magnetized iron/metal particles. Hell, it could even be a Tulpa (aka genie). Despite what it actually is, I believe that it is somehow “attached” or “magnetized” by the island. I do not think it can fly more than say 15-20 feet above the ground.

I’m not sure exactly how high the sonic fence is, but it looks about 15-20 feet and I believe the Dharma Initiative knew the max height it could fly, and built the sonic fence accordingly. Think back to all the times we’ve actually seen smokey chasing people, roaming in the trees, etc. etc., all those times I can’t think once where smokey was higher than say 15-20 feet. Also, if the producers decided to let the black smoke fly to indefinite heights and distances, then there’s no reason why it couldn’t travel to North American, or Australia, or wherever, and that would cause some problems in the plot.

The Sonic fence does not kill things, witness the sweeping views of the fence and yet no dead animals or birds. Also of course there is the recovery of Mikil.

The sonic fence is a bit weak IMHO. Its pretty obvious that you could climb the fence over the poles and the mysterious appearance of key pads seems a bit - er convienient. Also given that each small research station has two million CCTV cameras, surely you would put some overlooking your - life protecting - Sonic fence.

Apologies - The fence really iritates me!!

NN, you notice it correctly. The Smoke cant jump or fly, it moves only on the ground, producers said that.

Apparently it can kill. Mikhail said “fortunately the fence was not on a lethal setting”

what about the pilot, back in the first season, it ripped him out of the cockpit, which was quite high up.

Yeah, I’d say the cockpit was, what… 25 feet up there?

Still if the smoke monster can reach really height but has to have some part stuck on or into the ground… I suppose that makes sense. It just doesn’t look like it has some part of it close to the ground at all times.
