How did smokey, taking the form of Ben’s dead mother, get through the sonar fence and outside Ben’s window?

I don’t think anyone has mentioned this yet, but everyone seems to assume that several of the “apparitions” on the island are the black smoke changing forms. ie. Eko’s brother. I believed this as well, but what I do not understand is how, if this is true, how did smokey, taking the form of Ben’s mother, get through the sonar fence and outside Ben’s window?!?

Good question Nova… Didn’t even think about that, and here I was one of the ones convinced that it was Smokey taking the form of the dead… but you’re right.. it can’t be smokey, because, supposedly he cant get through the fence.. Dang Nova.. you just shot a arrow through that theory : (

Smokey wasn’t around when kate saw the horse or when Jack saw his dad. I dont think the two are exclusive.

All of this assumes that the smoke monster is actually deterred by the fence. Until the question is solidly answered, “Why didn’t the smoke monster just go over the fence to get to Juliet and Kate?” I think we must view with suspicion Juliet’s claim that the fence stops the monster. The Others may actually have some control of the monster, explaining what Kate (and the viewing audience) saw when the monster retreated after running into the fence.

All of that said, though… Ben seeing his mother while still on the Others’ campus would be problematic to smoke monster=visions theories if the area truly is smoke monster free.

If the apparition is a manifestation of the “smoke monster”, then it in fact didn’t go over the fence. However, we don’t know that those two events are connected.
