Just some ideas about what the hell may be going on.

If the universe self corrects, i guess the island is the reason, it is somehow running the whole show. I mean the island is fate, is what gives things a meaning. John survived the fall cause he was gonna be needed by the island. It was his destiny to implode the Swan, one way or the other (after a number of failed attempts, it was finally him who caused the implosion). It was Desmond’s destiny to crash the plane and do wathever he is doing on the island. I think somewhere in the past Dharma figured out (with help from a computer?) what was gonna happen, and found the only way out to win the game (see, i think there was only a sequence of moves that allowed John to win the chess game at the flame, it worked as a password), a really complicated chain of events that is the only solution to the valenzetti equation. Dharma attacked the hostiles as it knew it was the first move to save the world, even if Dharma itself was not meant to finish the task. But…why does Ben seem to have wanted the destruction of the hatch and therefore loss of communications? Maybe he is using all of the others cause he thinks he knows the sequence of events that must happen. Ignorance by some of the agents is necessary to allow the emergent properties of the system to arise (no selfishness allowed, nor extreme rationality, no bad people) and that’s why Ben tells people only the necessary to keep them from interfering with the design. Maybe Ben himself has limited knowledge of what must be done, and is being “used” by the island, Jacob, God, or whatever you like to call “HIM”.
