I think synchronicity opens the possibility for changing destiny—the Dharam Iniative’s job is to make sure that doesn’t happen.

This is, to some extent, a reposting of my ideas in the Dharma split. But I wanted to repost it as spoiler free as possible. My basic assumption here is that one important function of the Dharma Initiative is to keep people from straying from their destiny. I think synchronicity opens the possibility for changing destiny—DI’s job is to make sure that doesn’t happen. Based on that assumption, I’ve got several conclusions, and few questions:

  1. Christian was a Dharma Op. and the burden of keeping people on paths which were often difficult, destructive and/or tragic was what led to his alcoholism. A clear example of him using his guidance technicque was when he talked to Sawyer in the bar, after which Sawyer went out and killed Duckett (after having backed off doing it earlier.)

  2. Danielle too was a Dharma Op. When she says she killed her fellow scientists, it doesn’t mean that she pointed a gun at them and shot them, but that she made sure that they didn’t escape their destinies (which was to die). The burden of this has made her crazy. She still has those Dharma survival skills though. (Maybe we’ll see her deliver a roundhouse kick someday!)

  3. The guidance ability that these operatives have is genetic. The children taken from flight 815 are children of Dharma Ops. The experiments with pregnancy on the island is some attempt to produce children with even stronger guidance abilities. The island enhances these abilities. Locke and Walt have them.

  4. Locke has this same guidance ability but is using it not to keep people on the path, but to give them the chance to break away.

  5. Libby is another example, but I’m not sure whether she is like Locke or is like Dharma. What she did with Hurley seems a bit more like Locke to me, but I’m not sure.

  6. Mrs. Hawking, the Monk, Penny—more examples, and again not sure where they stand.

  7. I’m inclined to think the Others in general are in opposition to Dharma. I’m wondering if Jack is going to wind up on the wrong side of that divide because he sides with Juliet over Ben.

    Awesome.

    I mean, I don’t know if you’re right, but…

    Simply awesome…

Very nice work I’m wondering Jaz… what would you posit that DI believes is the consequence of going off your predestined path. Conversely, what would someone like Locke/the Others/etc think is the benefit of going off a predestined path?

Great theory! I have thought from the beginning when Claire visited Mr. Malkin, the psychic, if Aaron was going to be a special child. One of great importance! Now that we know that Claire and Jack are brother and sister, that seems even more likely.

Right… even in spite of the psychic claiming to Mr. Eko that he was a fraud.
