Alright, now I know my recent posts have been rather mundane and really havent offered alot to the table. But I really want you guys to check this one out.
Alright lets start from the beginning. We have all heard mention of some character in season three named “Jacob”. Its a huge mystery right now as everyone wants to know who Jacob is. The theories have already started to fly, between Jacob being Anthony Cooper to being some sort of AI or super computer. Here, I want to take a more practical approach to this Jacob. Let me start with the evidence for this theory. In 3.13 “The Man from Tallahassee”, Tom (or Mr. Beardy/Zeke) allows Jack some alone time with Kate by bringing him to the gameroom she was being held in. Before letting Jack walk in however, he motions to jack and then to the air in a circular motion, letting Jack know that they are either being watched or listened in on, possibly both. We all saw that right? So heres the question….why? Why would Tom do that? Surely not out of kindness to Jack, why that would spark a loyalty issue would it not? Which brings me to my next point. Loyalty.
Now, the only motive I could think of at first for Tom to warn Jack of the room being bugged was perhaps a loyalty issue. Perhaps Tom isnt in full agreeance with Ben on everything. Perhaps he is torn by the recent actions of his people. ank! wrong! Think about it, this is the same Mr.Beardy that captured Walt and was totally watching over Bens operation and trully showed he cared and respected Ben. Not to mention he follows his every word and command to a tee. That being said…then what gives? Well its not a question of his loyalty to Ben, because Ben wasnt the one watching them. Ben was in Bed, neither was Ryan watching….he was watching Sayid. My friends it was Jacob who was watching. The real loyalty issue is not with Ben….its with Jacob.
How do I make this make sense? Ok we know Benry got sick. Found out he had a tumor. The island isnt healing him. But we know that Ben believes in its healing capabilities as we saw how he so excitedly asked John about the healing of his legs. Now, the real equation here, on our part as the audience, is assumption. Most have assumed (I have as well) that Ben is the son of Jacob, much like the Biblical father and son. However, this theory implies they are not father and son but Ben rather is nothing more than a subordinate. He is a high ranking official of Jacobs given charge over the barracks and the work being done on island #2 (where they kept Jack, Kate, and Sawyer) Ben is given leadership over his set “people” serving him at his outpost (barracks). So to them, Ben is their leader….but not the big boss. Think of it like a low level employee answering to a floor manager or supervisor but also having the Owner of said business as the final boss. Chain of command if you will. They do what Ben tells them, cos if they dont he can report it to Big Boss Jacob.
Heres the problem for Ben. Ben is frustrated and afraid. He doesnt understand why he wasnt healed by the Island. Whyever his (Ben) people are there(the island)….they all seem to believe they are a) Important and b) morally good. They must also have been trained to believe that the island is their sanctuary and will heal their pains and tribulations. If Ben has believed this his entire life, you can imagine his shock when finding the tumor, and finding out it wasnt getting better. Also, you can now further understand his increased interest in Mr. Locke, which would also explain why he was hightailing it across the Island after John when he got caught in Rousseous trap. (To read more on this see my post the Locke Man Cometh) So Ben has a very big problem. He cant let his people…the majority of his people (outside his trusted few, i.e. Tom) learn of his tumor and lose faith in what they have been told. And furthermore he cant allow Jacob to find out about brining the Doc over to work on him.
I know that we see Ben outside his house in broad daylight in his wheel chair for all his people to see….so you must be saying…it doesnt look like he was trying to keep it a secret. But he is a manipulator and could have come up with a number of theories to explain the wheel chair. Besides he could always say that the island takes time to heal. The common person their doesnt even know Locke lost his legs, much less that he regained them instantly! All of this circles back around to Jacob. Ben cannot let Jacob find out he has let the Doc operate on him and that he has let the doc go back home. So he must send Jack out secretly. That could be the only explination why Tom would tell Jack the room was bugged. So that he would not blab on loudly about leaving the island, lest Jacob should hear it. All of this goes along with Bens speech to Locke about how pleased he was that Locke solved his problem with letting Jack go for him. Ben got what he wanted, the surgery, and doesnt have to answer his superior (jacob) when Jack and Juliette would leave.
I know their are some holes here and im sure you guys will bust me on them. But thats really what im looking for anyways. Objective opinions. So let me hear you guys!

I guess I thought Tom was just being polite. I mean, I imagine Tom thought that Jack had some intimate good byes to say or something, and Tom wanted him to know that the room wasn’t private. Of course, that doesn’t explain why he seemed to tell Jack in such a way that the people listening in might not be able to tell he was telling Jack that, but… I don’t know… habit maybe. Still, it did bug me and I do wonder what that was about, but I’m not sure everything you say here follows. Quite apart from Tom and his behavior, though, on a more general level I think you pose an intriguing possibility.
Again, I think that you are assuming that Ben didn’t WANT to have the tumor. Remember, Ben says that there is a “box” that can make what you imagine a reality. I think that it would be just like Ben to WISH himself a tumor for the sole purpose of experimenting on Jack. Do you remember when Jack asked Ben if Ben wanted Jack to fix him? Ben’s curious response was that he wanted Jack to WANT to fix him. I think Ben gave himself a tumor on purpose.
once again les my master….you teach me my faults of assuming. But its just so strange to wish for a tumor. Sorry pal, I dont buy that.
What, are strange happenings something out of the ordinary for this show? It seems that Ben is always doing something to force one of the Losties to deal with their demons. I suspect that the tumor operation was a way to make Jack deal with one of his. Specifically, Jack’s inability to let things go.
I certainly agree with that, L.
You could be completely right about Ben “wishing” for a tumor for the sole purpose of converting Jack to the others way of thinking….but I’m not convinced. I agree with most of the thoeries both of you post, but I think the tumor grew there naturally and it has Ben in “freak out” mode, so to speak. Why else would he be SO interested in Locke’s immediate recovery? Because I think he’s shocked he had a tumor at all. Then again, it’s hard to take anything Ben says or does at face value. I like your thought process on Jacob being the big boss and Ben just an employee, not nec. his father. very possible, and probably more likely than Jacob being his father….
