Maybe he just misses the way things were…

So here is my theory about just the last episode, feel free to pick it apart and add to it, just watch the criticism… I’m fragile. ;) Just kidding.

So my theory is this:

Perhaps Jack is depressed because he actually misses the island, more pointedly, the way things were on the island. He was the leader, the one in charge, and most importantly, out from under his father’s shadow.

This would explain why he is so desperate to go back, the unrelenting search for the island. It would also explain why he tells Kate that he is tired of lying. I’m sure that everyone he comes in contact with, once they find out who he is says something to the effect of, “Wow, I bet you’re glad to be home!” Or something the like.. and of course rational, interaction with other human beings would tend to dictate that one would say, “Oh yeah, I missed watching The View (GRIN) every day!!!”

And maybe this desire to be back in the almost ideal (at least in Jack’s mind) surroundings of the island has grown and manifested itself into this huge monkey that rides around on Jack’s back ultimately leading him to pharmaceuticals and alcohol to try and dull the pain that comes with such a strong desire and absolutely no way to ever achieve that desire….

Said monkey could grow even larger with the fact that no one else that got rescued seems to have the same desire furthering the feelings of isolation that has been proven to come along with alcoholism and drug abuse. It would appear by Kate’s comments about the funeral that she perhaps could really care less about the island and could be trying to put it behind her…

Add to this the fact that nobody else came to the funeral telling Jack that he may indeed be the only one with these feelings…. So, there, just a few thoughts …. let me know what you think.

    One more little addition:

This could also explain why Locke tells Jack, “You’re not supposed to do this…” Locke too is glad to be on the island, for reasons not too unlike those that Jack harbors, and he (Correctly) assumes that Jack will end up missing the island as well…

What if the island is a “clinic” for Lost people and although Jack is now out of it he is still lost psychologically. He manifests this by depression and alcohol/drug abuse. So yes - he does have a big monkey on his back. And yes - the others that were rescued have been Healed and therefore don’t need to return to the clinic (Island).

Good point. Maybe he does just want to get back because he feel he is a loser and maybe Kate is trying to put it all behind her. Honestly though, I believe that it is more to it than that (Good theory:+)…but I really, really have to give u a plus one for sarcastically mentioning Jack enjoying watching the View…LOL…..I hate that show. +1

Thinker: I interpreted Locke’s comment to mean he knew something Jack did not. He wasn’t surprised, no, Locke was more…exasperated. It was like Locke had to let Jack make his own choice, but he was saddend that Jack chose to make the call. But it wasn’t because Locke felt sorry for Jack - least I didn’t take it that way. It was more Locke saying “Damn, all kinds of bad things are gonna happen now - and I’m not gonna get to stay on this island and remain the Great White Hunter.”

To me, if Jack wanted to go back to relive his glory days (nod to Bruce Spingsteen) I think that would make him a very weak character. There has to be something left behind or the world now is really messed up because of something he did/didn’t do on the island.

    Shell,

I agree, he (Jack) needs to get back to the island to correct something or to finish something. He didn’t get it right the first time.

Yeah i think jack has some unfinished work! so he needs to get back to the island to sort it out! i reckon who ever gets him and the other losties off the island has told them not to talk about the island and for none of them to meet up together thats why jack and kate didnt meet up at the pub! and ofcourse he misses the beach, sea, jungle and all the ladys wanting to be his girlfriend!

I think Jack being tired of lying has a lot more influence on the storyline than just faking his happiness to people that he’s back. I also think it somehow ties into Kate not being in prison.
