However, if the flash forward in the season 3 finale is accurate, then it appears that much of the story, to speak, has already been written, and we are being told the story by someone on the back end of the story

sup;
I have been watching LOST from the very beginning, and until the season 3 finale, was convinced hat what we saw on the island was the present for the losties. Even after everyone decided that the events on the island were a couple of years prior to the show opening, I was convinced that the story on the island was the present for the losties and that we were being shown the story as it unfolds. I believe that the fact that we have only been shown 92 days in 3 years is pretty good evidence that this is the way the writers wanted us to think. However, if the flash forward in the season 3 finale is accurate, then it appears that much of the story, to speak, has already been written, and we are being told the story by someone on the back end of the story. For instance, in “To Kill a Mockingbird” we are told the story by an adult narrator through the lens of her childhood. I am not sure which character I would bet on as the narrator, but certainly Jack, kate, Locke, Ben, Walt, and Hurley, Claire, Aaron, Desmond, or any other person currently alive is a possibility. If I am right, this changes the dynamic, and the honesty of the situations that we are presented. It will be interesting to see it play out. And I think everything will be explained without use of too much sci-fi or mythical/religious intervention. While a lot of people kick around those ideas, I think it is evident from our own board that such an ending would alienate a huge portion of the fans, and I think the writers will do their best to please as many people as possible.

Lost does not seem like it’s being narrated. We see many things happening to many people. It’s impossible that ONE charachter knows everything that happened to everyone. Sometimes we also see things happening to one specific person.
Naah… I don’t believe it’s being narrated.
what about the beginning of episodes when a deep voice tells us, “Last time on Lost” Someone is telling the story, they have to be if it is in the past
we see this in every show.. 24 / Heroes … I don’t think that voice is the narrator :)
interesting, I like the Harper lee reference, that´s a great book. I´m not sure I buy this theory all the way just yet, but it´s an interesting thought. New perspective indeed. Who knows, maybe it will all end with a single oompa-loompa with a dark voice.
a great portion of literature is told by someone other than the characters, from Homer to Dante and beyond, we need to recognize the possibility that the story could be being told by someone we don’t even know yet. Even 300 was told by a minor character in the long run, just throwing it out there.
One obvious connection which you didn’t make, and I thought you were, was that “the island” story was part of the past and that what appeared to be “the flash forward” was actually, the present! I am not saying that I subscribe to this theory, however it is a possibility!
that is definitely one possibility that could be. I really think everything on the island has already occurred and we are just now being told the story. I am not sure when the present is, but I think it is beyond the flashforward as well.
dabiatchishere: You made a though leap out of obsurity there!
I can almost be swayed with lockeko’s theory now. Yes the timeframe is a problem. For them the 92 days started in ?sept ‘03? And for us it has spanned 4 years. But the intro of the flash foward threw me at first and now I think I may have a grasp on it. In the flash foward Jack was using a razr or some knock off when calling Kate (over and over, you sad shell of a man..) And when I saw it, I was momentarily caught by it, but I didn’t put it together until the reveal that it was indeed a flash foward. But now it is even more of a reveal. Yes, the “flash-fowards” are only “foward” for the survivors, for us it will be present day, Why else would he have that phone. He’d have had a blackberry 9000, or an iPhone. So now it is very clear for me, that the flash fowards are just present day for us, but as seen through the lense of those on the island.
Excellent theory! +1
Sorry I don’t agree the story is being told by a narrator, the flash forward is just an element used by the producers to tease us into continuing to watch the show, like a “see they do get off the island” sort of thing. I think if it is a persons flash forward the obvious choice’s would be Desmond or Locke (being shown by Jacob) although I think this bears no relevance though with the time frame on the island.
They Started in September 2004 so series one for a time was current if the time frame was to stay correct the show would have to run every day.
sorry your theory just doesn’t paint the right picture for me
I am convinced there is a future beyond the flashforwards and I too am interested to see how it will pan out. The writers are very in control of how they have structured this in terms of time. They began it in the real-time of the series opening, they have had 3 series of flashbacks, then presumably will have 3 series of ‘flashforwards’- if they are truly flashforwards. +1
