I didn’t see too much in this ep. I’ll just put down my random thoughts/questions as a way to get discussion started:

  1. There was a lot of older men giving younger men stuff to ingest—Locke to Boone (Hallucinogen); Jack to Charlie (aspirin); Jin to Hurley (sea urchin & fish).
  2. How to accomplish something? Locke’s story about Michelangelo—working on the statue even when he seems only to be staring at it. Seemed to fit with his later statement describing Jack as a busy man. Along the same lines: Locke tells Boone he’ll be able to cut himself free when he has the proper motivation. Kate says to Sun, be careful what you wish for. The way Boone is tied means that either movement forward or backward chokes him.
  3. Does Locke have a connection or some control over the smoke monster implied by the fact that the hallucinogen makes Boone see the smoke monster?
  4. Why does Kate lie to Sun about going to Bali when she doesn’t think Sun can speak English? Does she already know/suspect?
  5. When Locke tells Jack that the boars are migrating away from their area is that just about telling Jack a story to explain why they haven’t brought any boars back from hunting? Or is it also part of some larger strategy Locke might have about moving the camp further inland?
  6. Locke doesn’t need a compass anymore. This contrasts with the conversation between Jack and Sayid who both “know” where North is, but North isn’t there.

good observations. John Locke seems very untrustable in this episode.

quick comment, did you notice when Boone asked Locke what he was mixing up? He said he would need it for later. Obviously, this was well before Boone announced his intentions to tell Shannon

You know Jaz, “Hearts & Minds” is a quirky little episode and I had a lot of trouble trying to figure it out. One thing I got out of was the disparity we see in how people think (minds) they are viewed and what is really in someone else’s heart.

For example: Hurley is convinced Jin hates him, but in the end Jin hands him a fish. The inability to communicate creates the disconnect.

Boone is conflicted with his brain telling him he shouldn’t have insestuous feelings for his step-sister, but his heart tells him otherwise. Locke tells him to “its time to let go” - in that Boone is too overprotective of his sister - he needs to let her live her own life. Here, Locke is conscious therapist again - helping people to evolve or escape their shortcomings, or metaphorically, create a new Boone (aka David).

When Locke was talking about Michealangelo, I thought he was doing a parody, insinuating that he himself, Locke, were “the master” - in both his heart AND his mind. I’ve never seen Locke more sure of his connection to the island than this episode. “Not anymore” when asked if he needed the compass. And I can’t remember him acting so mysteriously and self-centered. He lies to Jack and has totally forgotten about the search for Claire, boar, water, etc. He is so obsessively pursuing his new path, its like he doesn’t even care about anyone else. Is he developing a God-complex?

His message to Jack is very ominous: man being the most dangerous predator of all - now that was creepy.

This episode was supposed to be about Boone, but it was way more telling about Locke and how he’s changing, mutating, becoming obsessed, becoming part of the island?

Jaz, this doesn’t really have anything to do with your theory, but don’t you just love how cool Sayid can be when someone’s in his face? When Boone confronts Sayid and tries to ward him away from Shannon, Sayid just plays it cool. He is so much more intelligent and capable than Boone, the incompetent, who can only buy his way out of problems.

Yeah that kind of coolness does project a kind of invulnerability. But I feel very sorry for Boone in this ep.

Yeah Boone had a rough deal in this episode - some evil git made him sleep with his sister, eeeerk. The guy pretends to be clear and focused especially in the first 3 eps but in reality he’s a mess.
