- After episode: 1.24: Exodus: Part 2
- Status: Current
- Flag this theory:
Why, if this is so, would he need to go to all the trouble he did in season 2 to kidnap Jack?
Why wouldn’t he simply have smokie grab him, like it did with Locke in Exodus, and deliver him straight to them? Not only simplying matters but also reducing the other’s risk of exposure!
I await with baited breath!

I seem to agree with you, CPB, as I also don’t think that the monster can be controled. I could personally do without the sarcasm, unless it is followed by an appropriate emoticon.
I’m in a giving mood, so here are a couple answers:
There are no Cerberus vents close enough to Jack’s location(s), and the “grabby” version of the monster is tethered to the ground.
Risk of injury, especially to Jack’s precious surgeon fingers, was too high to employ such a crude machine as Smokie.
Someone once asked the producers a question like, (paraphrasing) “why did Jack even have to be abducted? Why couldn’t Ben just walk out of the jungle and say, ‘oh, you’re a surgeon?!’, ‘little help?’” Their answer was simply, “That wouldn’t make for a good story, would it?” I think that answer applies here.
Jack IS the smoke monster. Hey, it could happen. My point here is that the writers are making the rules. Just because YOU don’t know the reason yet, doesn’t mean it can’t exist.
You may resume normal breathing. :)
Sorry about that Karmavore but I think it was justified after the way my theory was slated! lol.
But I think that too many ppl presume the others control smokey, which i think is the most boring explanation.
I don’t think the others control smokey at all. we don’t even know what smokey is yet.
I think they make mouthwash for that baited breath condition thing
Have you seen the winning entry into DL&CC’s post-season 2 “What do you believe the Monster in Lost really is?” contest?

DL&CC say: “The answer we selected might be somewhat right, totally right — or completely off-base. But we liked it and found it very cool and intriguing.”
I would guess that this winning entry is “somewhat right”. But which part? I like the idea of “turning it off” from a hatch somewhere.
The others do not control Smoky, I feel certain of that. They stay out of Smoky’s territory if they can, are afraid of it themselves. It may move to certain areas at certain times that they keep track of. The Losties were in Smoky territory, when Ben went there, it was stated somethign about how he was the only one who could. I took that to mean that due to his mental abilities that the others did not have, he could evade or fool Smoky and get through, whereas they could not.
The others or no one else controls Smokey… and it’s actually “The Smokies”!!! :)

Karmavore I hadn’t seen that before - excellent. Thanks for posting!
Juliet said, “We don’t know what it is”.
I think the Asian Doc in the orientation vids said something about indigenous wildlife and the sonic fence.
…And of course we know Juliet always say the truth, right shambuddy? ;-)
Oh, and sham, you’re right. Dr. What’s-his-name-now talks about the fence and wildlife in the vid young Ben is watching while his dad is shouting at someone because they made him a janitor.
