In the 1970’s Widmore Construction built the Dharma Stations and Paik Heavy Industires supplied and fitted them with custom built hardware. This contract and others that they later secured with Hanzo Foundation made both corporations extremely rich.

Widmore is approached by renegade Hanzo scientist Thomas Mittelwerk who explains to both of them the nature of the island and of the research facilities they were constructing.

Mittelwerk proposes a deal - in return for the use of their wealth to raise a mercenary army to seize control of the island and employ their own scientists to study its properties, Mittelwerk will give both companies the right to patent anything that developes from their research.

There is one small problem with this plan - Mittelwerk knows the rough location of the island but knows that it would be impossible to pin-point due to the magnetic anomaly causing a curvecture of space in the area around it.

Widmore hatches a plan to hold a boat race around the world on a route passing through the vicinity that the island is thought to be in, before the race all contestants boats are fitted with tracking devices designed by Mittelwerk to enable them follow its signal to the island.

As fate would have it on a stormy night Desmonds boat finds itself sailing along Ben’s magical co-ordinate and Desmond is shipwrecked on the island. Widmore knows it is Desmond who has found the island as he failed to return from the race, and while he has gotten rid of his daughters suitor the ingenuis plan to find the island has failed due to the prescence of the Looking-Glass Hatch and Rousseau’s signal blocking the signal from their beacon.

Meanwhile Penny Widmore is approached by Mrs Hawking who tell’s her about Desmond’s destiny on the island (whatever it is) and about her father’s plans for the island, and furthermore that it is her destiny to find Desomond and help him save the island form her father’s evil schemes.

Penny set’s up a team at the South Pole to search for the magnetic charge building up (as fortold by Mrs Hawking). While Widmore has planted a spy in her camp and he is alerted when Penny’s team detects the magnetic anomaly and decided’s to act fast and secure the island before Penny’s team reaches it.

Widmore dispatches the freighter with a crew of mercenaires on board and has them comb the area in helicopters, each pilot equipped with a sateliette phone and a photo of Penny and Desmond so as to gain Desomonds trust and his aid in unjamming the signal so that their team can track the phones siganl and move in for the kill.

in the case of the others they’d want them out of the way as they wouldn’t stand for anyone exploiting the islands power, or possibly it was Mittelwerk that supplied them with thier gun’s during the purge in return for allowing him to take over Dharma’s work and when Dharma was wiped out Ben double-crossed him.

As for the losties I think when they arrive they will act friendly towards them at first and play saviour with them but Desmond will expose their more sinister goals. They might also become interested in the losties as if what naomi say’s is true they are all supposed to be dead.

Well who ever know’s what Lockes up to!? Personally I think that Locke places the island above all else and was told by Jacob/Walt/the Island/Smokey or whatever he is communing with these day’s that making the call would be bad for the island, he killed naomi because she is making the call and he was able to do this because he doesn’t know her and has no attachment to her, but with Jack he would have liked to but he has formed an attachment to Jack and can’t kill him no matter problems leaving him alive will cause, like with his dad. (Perhap’s he get Sawyer to do it in season 4 Lol!)

I like the theory, CPB, it was well thought out, well written and very interesting. +1

I agree about Locke shockingly killing Naomi, but not being able to kill Jack. That makes sense.

I wonder though, how did Widmore find the island in the first place?

Do Des and Penny have a son named Telemachos?

CPB: I like the train of this theory. Widmore as the evil industrialist. Yes, I like it a lot. The boat race as a smoke screen - very clever.

@Kat: why Locke could kill Naomi but NOT Jack. Could it possibly be that Locke knows Jack is destined to do something (maybe it was ALL revealed to him when he came face to face with Cerebus in Walkabout ) and if Locke were to kill Jack, then Locke would prevent that outcome from occurring? Sort of like the Grandfather theory? (Note: I’m NOT saying Locke is Jack’s grandfather)

    pabodie: great analogy!

    Good post.

Yeah, Jack wasn’t “supposed to” make the phone call, but obviously John wasn’t “supposed to” kill Jack.

great theory I think we will find out that Paik and Widmore are in this together. Nice work.

I like the theory because Mittlewerk is thrown in there. I know he’s going to have a big role before the story’s over.

To that guyinalaska i was workin the nightshift as i am once again tonite.

Stip, good point about the grandfather paradox thing I hadn’t thought of that, I also wonder if we will ever know exactly what happened with Locke and the Monster in Walkabout, I think it’s time they filled in that Blank.

Thank’s to all who voted for me, and to those who gave me minus points - don’t cower at the back, step up and explain yourselves!

Hey CPB a good theory here. Of course I don’t know if any of it will turn out to be true but its nicely constructed and totally plausable.

For what its worth I’m with Stip and the Prof. John wasn’t supposed to kill Jack. Locke knows a lot more than we think he does in my opinion.
