As we get her backstory, (Whenever that might be, I think these are questions that we should keep in mind) Anyone got any popcorn?

— TheThinker

Came to the Island (Supposedly) in 1988 From a Science/Research ship out in the ocean. Claims to have picked up the numbers being broadcast and that is what led them to the island where they marrooned the boat on the beach….

So here’s my questions:

If she heard the numbers being broadcast and that’s what led them to the island in the first place, why did she change the message? And still include the numbers the second time?

On the recorded message, she mentions “Brennan” being outside, and that he took some keys from her…. keys to what? And “Brennan” being outside is odd if she’s claiming to have killed those that remained of her original group. She claimed they were going “Mad” with sickness.

If her ship crashed on the beach… where is it? Have we seen it?

What exactly was her “Science” team studying? Or were they looking for something?

great points, I too wonder where her boat is.

Rousseau certainly is the mysterious one. But I’m not sure she re-recorded the numbers in her distress signal.

Her ship crashed on the rocks and since broke apart and washed out to sea. No sense having 2 wrecks on the island when we’ve already got the Black Rock - right?

No clue as to what they were supposed to be studying, but in two different episodes, she contradicts her story. To Sayid she said they got caught in a storm and crashed. To Hurley, she said they heard the transmission of the numbers and followed that. What is the truth?

Brennan - hmmm. I’ve often thought he was related to Kate’s childhood sweetheart,Tom Brennan (possibly his father?) and that possibly he was in the hatch before Kelvin. Dunno, but timing is right anyway.

I thought you were going to pose she is a double agent or working for Ben - now THAT would be a good one to debate!

Lastly, when Rousseau changed the message and stopped the numbers from being transmitted, why didn’t anyone investigate? I thought that was the whole purpose of the numbers being transmitted, so that Dharma HQ could know that work was still underway.

    Great Q’s! +1 from me

Theorize a little further and say that their ship crashed/ran aground in a storm, and after being on the island found the radio signal with the numbers… THEN changed the recording (And we know that she did because it was HER voice being broadcast) … I still have the question, IF she changed the recording to be a help message, why did she add the numbers again?

Does she know what they are? Does she know they are important? If so How? Could she be a Dharma employee that ran into seclusion right before the Purge?

  4. Arthur Aug 12, 2007 2:38 p.m. Comment: 4

Thinker - I’m confused. I don’t think she added the numbers again. How do we validate that?

  5. TheThinker Aug 12, 2007 2:45 p.m. Comment: 5

    First off, that’s why I called it a THEORY….. BUT -

She told Hurley that she was lured to the island by the numbers … IF that is not true, then she still was the one that broadcasted the numbers in the message, we know this because it is HER voice that hear….

I guess the question that I was asking is WHY did she broadcast the numbers? Does she know what they are? If so how? If she does know, does that mean she was down the hatch at some point? Was she a button pusher? Is she Dharma? Was she Dharma?

To me it looks like she has some idea what they are/represent?

I’m so silly… look at that, I didn’t call it a theory…. wow…. I’m silly. A thousand apologies, but you get my drift no?

  7. lockeko Aug 12, 2007 3:01 p.m. Comment: 7

artie is confused, the message Sayid picked up, recorded by Danielle cotained the numbers. Thats why thinker said she re-recorded the numbers, and yes, why would she do that.

  8. billinsandiego Aug 12, 2007 3:21 p.m. Comment: 8

+1 I think Danielle is one big weirdo chick. I agree with all the conceptual thoughts you added, “Thinker”. One question I always have had is why she had Ben, and what was the real reason she gave him to the Losties.

  9. TheThinker Aug 12, 2007 3:48 p.m. Comment: 9

    Who had ben?

    you got any ben-gay?

  11. shell Aug 12, 2007 4:44 p.m. Comment: 11

Thinker, She didn’t broadcast THE numbers. There were numbers in her broadcast but that was counting the reiterations. THE numbers were being broadcasted out to her ship prior to arrival.

  12. lockeko Aug 12, 2007 5:11 p.m. Comment: 12

shell I may be wrong, but I thought the broadcast still did contain the numbers

  13. Arthur Aug 12, 2007 5:45 p.m. Comment: 13

Respectfully, Artie ain’t confused. Timeline goes like this:

Numbers that Sam Toomey heard begin being broadcast, Rousseau’s ship intercepts, changes course, crashes. Rousseau’s team dies/she kills them. Rousseaus finds radio tower. Rousseau changes repeating message from THE 4,8,15,16,23,42 numbers to her French “They’re all dead” message translated by Shannon.

Shell is right. The number’s Sayid calculated were the # of times the message has been played. They advanced by 1 every time it played. Sayid’s pretty good with math if he did 16yr calculation in his head!

Arthur, I’m not saying you’re wrong, what I am saying is that I think Thinker and I both thought/think that Danielle recorded the numbers on the message that Shannon translated for sayid, and there was also the counter, which was in a different voice. That’s where the confusion was, you were arguing no such recording existed and Thinker was saying it did. Just seemed like you guys weren’t what each other was saying.

+1 for your non-theory TT. Danielle is quite a character, isnt she? I think shell remain a mystery for awhile, unfortunately, though.

However, I did a little research at About.com and got a definitive answer on the signal she sent out. Shannon translated it as “the woman is asking for help and that everyone else is dead”.

Thats in the Pilot Part 2 right at the end, and when Shannon gives the translation Charlie says “Guys, where are we?” Ive always loved that line, gave me chills.

Well, I hope that helps a bit.

Thanks Annie, I thought the numbers were still being broadcast.

I think that Rosseau is strange, but simply because the writers created her before they thought of much of the future plot. Her stories about her team getting sick don’t jive with anything we have seen so far.

  21. you_know_the_name Aug 12, 2007 11:48 p.m. Comment: 21

    Dear primetonal,

I disagree with why you think Danielle is strange (because the writers created her before they thought of much of the future plot).

She is strange because the writers intentionally made her that way, giving us theorists something to speculate about. Her flashback will be very informative (and the producers have pointed out they’ll have one) but it will have to coincide with another event on Lost.

The problem is, Cuse and Lindelof think the flashback will be in season 5, giving us another 2 years of theorizing…

Annie, the best line from Charlie in that scene was….”THE FRENCH! Its the French! I didn’t think I would ever be so bloody happy to hear the French!”

shell :-) That was a great line!

Brennan—Tom’s father, another Kate connection. I begin to like the idea of Kate being connected to Dharma in some way. Do we know for instance that she would up in Australia just as a convenient place (and how conenient is it really?) to evade the police?

I wonder if Danielle has spent some time in room 23? Maybe too much time? She hates Ben without fully remembering who he is?

What are the chances that the boat the others use to capture walt and attempt to kill mikey, sawyer, and Jin is danielle’s boat.

  25. Arthur Aug 13, 2007 7:59 a.m. Comment: 25

jaz: you should go with that one! Kate in cahoots with Dharma…young Tom Brennan & Kate recorded their timecapsule message on 8-15-89…Rousseau arrived at the island circa ‘88-‘89…Rousseau’s Brennan…Brennan had a key…so did Des…yada yada yada.

You could do great things with that one.
