Each and every single survivor of the crash has a purpose and is supposed to be on the Island.
The “ring lady” tells Desmond in “Flashes Before Your Eyes” that the man with the red shoes was supposed to die - that it was “his path”. Just as “it is your path to go to the island” is what she says to Desmond
Now assuming that she is right - and each and every person has a “path” - then it cannot be coincidence that our Losties ended up on the island. Who is to say that only Desmond has a path and not our Losties? Even the man with the red shoes had a path (which unfortunately ended by getting some bricks on his head). So this would mean that each and every one of our beloved Losties is on the island for a reason and has a “purpose” to fulfill there. And when they die on the island - it is because they were supposed to die because they served their purpose. Which would also sort of explain why Jack wasn’t able to save Boone even though he normally seems to be able to save anyone.
So I think we will at one point or another find out exactly why EACH and EVERY person is there and what their purpose is.
Not sure if this is really a theory or how it could help figuring out what the hell is going on on that damn island. :)
I also noticed that the “ring lady” acted VERY suprised when Desmond said he would buy the ring. So even though she somehow knew what was supposed to happen - she had no clue about Desmond’s “trip back in time” and that his decisions might be different now.
edit : also just realized that the FIRST time Desmond “changes history” is when he warns the barman about the baseball bat (“Duck Brother!”) and then gets hit by hit himself. He told his friend earlier that the barman DOES get hit by the bat. So it seems that even though the lady told him there is no way to change things - he keeps trying.
Oh and - why is it that the stuff you write in the “Summary” field of the theory never actually shows up anywhere?? o.O

What about the other plane survivors? Are they supposed to be in there, filling the screen, talking and doing unimportant stuff all the chapters whereas our beloved losties gang take care of the bussines?
Perhaps it sounded sarcastic, but I wrote this because I think these extras impede the “all happens for a reason” plot, and I don’t know if this is on purpose or just a production’s carelessness.
Ms. Hawking definitely realizes about Desmond’s lucid-flashback-time-skipping-thing, because she tells him that he will go to the Island for 3 years and push the button and turn the fail-safe key, all things Desmond has already done. And she tells him these things because she knows that he has already done them.
