She uses the truth to stall, to cover up, to confuse

— HappyAtheist

The Others lied to Sawyer, telling him that they’d put an implant in him that would lead to cardiac arrest if his heart rate went above a certain number.

Several episodes later, it’s revealed that the Others actually put an implant in Claire that causes her to have symptoms of a serious sickness that Jack, a real doctor, recognizes as authentic.

Juliet also tells Sayid, “If I told you the truth, you’d kill me.” She later stops Sayid and Sawyer from attacking her by reminding them of what they’ve done.

She uses the truth to stall, to cover up, to confuse, to mislead, to lie.

So does Ben when, for example, he tells Jack that his plan was to manipulate him into wanting to do the surgery.

What other examples of using the truth to lie can we think of?

What are the implications of this?

The best lie is always a half-truth.

That’s true to a certain extent. But if you’re lying so much, and it’s based on half-truths, how to keep your story straight?

Or: what if the Others have never lied? Can we cite a moment when we know they lied?

Ben claimed that he needed the sub to be destroyed so his people would think there was no way to leave the island. Either he lied to Locke when he said this, or he’s lying to his people.

This and katrina’s example just scratch the surface.
