Don’t let Ben fool you too…
— leonardocarfi
Ben is manipulating everyone on the island, using his extraordinary mental skills he is able to use people to achieve his goal, wich you’ll find out later in this theory.
Ben was born on the Island as he stated. The electromagnetic activity of the island caused his mind to grow extraordinarily powerful, or either his condition is unrelated to the island (consider how, during season 2, he constantly tries to manipulate the losties he encounters, although first I would just tend to let go i now think these are clues). However, being super intelligent, he realized Dharma was failing to accomplish it’s goal. He then created a plan to get things done. First, he turned the people who where living on the island since a long time (the statue builders) against Dharma, and Dharma against them. Before this both factions were coexisting on the island. He then took advantage of the confusion to get his hands on Cerberus or Smokie, (his original purpose as conceived by Dharma is left open), wich he knew he could use as a “mind reader”. Smokie is the “magic box” wich he is speaking to Locke about on 3x17, it’s like he knew of Locke’s father by reading his mind, and captured him trough contacts with the outside world (I think of smokie as some sort of remote-controlled “metallic worm” with an aerial smoke portion, controlled from a room by a bunch of NASA-like scientists with playstation joysticks and monitor screens) He then could combine his hability to manipulate, perhaps also reinforced by his brain washing techniques, to the fact that he could know exactly what was on people’s mind. This way he was able to get people to do exactly what he wanted. He told the actual others (maybe some original inhabitants of the island, plus ex-Dharma, plus another brainwashies) that they were building a better tomorrow (wich we will see is not completely a lie). He also induced the number 2 person in Dharma initiative to create a virus…what we are not told is that the Virus is created to infect ONLY pregnant women, as a tool to control population. For Ben, however, the Virus has another meaning, by getting the others sterile, it forces them to “expand”, by searching another childs and people from the outside to join them. Ben can later brainwash this people if it’s worth the shot. By converting kids he is controlling the future. This way, with time, he will brainwash more and more people, transforming the entire world in “others”. This society, following him as a perfect being, can not destroy itself, and then he will have changed the values of the equation avoiding self destruction of the human race. His influence is rooted deeper than we think, he has begun by Dharma and probably he now controlls also governments, but there’s no way to know (think of the Lost Experience, when a Dharma person tells Rachel Blake he is helping her because “HE” wants him to). A further implication of this theory is that maybe they’re not being rescued because of the island being quarantined because of the presence of the virus, as Dharma had contacts with the Global Welfare.
Personally, Ben remembers me of “The Mule”, the character created by Asimov in his stories that had the hability to control people’s emotions and thinking and threatened the Foundation. Plus, you’ve probaly heard the authors are big Stephen King’s fans, well now…it all sounds a little bit “Stephen’s” to me, don’t it? As you see, details are left open. Please share your comments to this theory, and suggest any changes or correlations you might think about.

I’m right there with you in regard to most of this. See my “Alliances” posts and “Regarding ‘the numbers’ and Swan Station”. Where we depart from each other is mostly in terms of how much power Ben actually has. He might be as powerful as you think. Or… he might just be really good at reading the signs. (Please see my posts in regard to that as well.)
Yes, and I ditto what ProfOzone is saying. I really like the thought about not being rescued because of the quarantine. It’s something I’ve not considered before now. Good stuff!
honestly I think ben is just a lier…lying to get what he wants. I don’t think that writers would go as far as to give him super powers. I think the box was just a metaphor for, “na na! I can get anything I want because I’m super cool like that. in your face locke…now join me or you’ll never be happy with the losties who are always trying to get of the island and live in terrible;e conditions!”
