What if humans, through very advanced science/mathematical/philosphical theory, finally learned how to steal god’s power

— HappyAtheist

Ok, maybe I’m crazy, but I had an idea after I read this article calles “Philosphical Differences” on ew.com: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20035497,00.html

What if god her/himself is imprisoned on the island?

So, the article asks whether the DI wanted to kill “the idea of God”, but I’m wondering whethered they’ve killed/imprisoned god him/herself.

I know, it seems counter-intuitive to imagine god, or any god, imprisoned by mortal humans on an island.

But the Bible is chock-full of stories of humans defying god from day 1 (Adam and Eve, Judas, etc…)

What if humans, through very advanced science/mathematical/philosphical theory, finally learned how to steal god’s power by doing something equivalent to eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil and being able to possess god’s power (as the serpent claims?

What if they realized that by harnassing the power of a god who is the ruthless god of the Old Testament, they could end war, poverty, adn famine? What if the god they’ve captured in the Old Testament eye-for-an-eye god who plays mind games (e.g. with Lot, with Abraham and Isaac)?

What if the show is based upon the idea that the omnipotent, or nearly omnipotent god that inspired the Judao-Christian God was an entity that really existed, and was eventually harnassed by humans, an event enabled by the huge advances in mathematical theories and scientific technologies of the 20th century?

What if these scientists/thinkers are trying to use the “god” they’ve harnassed in order to change the Valenzetti equation, in order to save humankind?

What if god is imprisoned inside some special force field (think X-Men) and Smokey is the only tool he has for changing the effects of the world around him?

What if the god always lived on the island, worshipped and maintained by the indigenous people (as yet unseen)?

What if Jacob is the gatekeeper of the imprisoned god?

How would all of the biblical references fit into this theory?

Whatever it’s called, whatever it’s been called throughout the history of the world, I do think that the secret the DI and the Others are guarding, trying to exploit is a force akin to a divine force.

I appreciate your feedback.

It seems as though I’ve heard this kind of thing suggested before… back when people were trying to decide just what the Swan Station was “really” holding back.

It’s an interesting concept. How do the crash survivors fit into all of it, though? And is there a way of describing all of that in less “religious” terms, to satisfy the science camp?

Maybe the Others used the god’s powers in order to bring the Losties aboard. Or maybe the Losties being brought to the island was an unexpected side effect of their meddling. Or maybe the god was able to calle them their from beyond his/her imprisonment, and s/he wants them to intervene in the Others’ plans.

In less religious terms, the god would be the “force” or “powers” of the island that various groups—including the indigenous people, the DI / the Others—have been struggling over control of. Although I felt that the science/faith dichotomy was crucial to the show, I just wasn’t thinking about it in religious terms at all, until I read the ew article. In scientific terms, the “powers” could be elcetromagnetic forces, an unknown substance, a now-lost but once highly advanced technology etc…

    Ah, OK. Hm… interesting…

Actually, this does play right into the whole “science/faith” thing, because what the faith camp approaches with “superstition”, the science camp attempts to understand via “manipulation”. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? It’s anybody’s guess.
