She was totally fooling Jack at the time, playing the damsel in distress to appeal to Mr. Hero. Acknowledging that she was there because she bore an uncanny resemblance to his ex wife, but implying that was Ben’s doing. Telling Jack about her dissatisfaction with Ben to earn his trust.
OR, it was all true. She was a fragile woman, wounded by her ex husband, deeply attached to her sister and dedicated to changing the world through her work, and just hurt enough by her past to be willing to risk it all for some adventure. And, with all the free time on the island, sans internet and day jobs and t.v., they totally learn black-belt karate when they’re not running the book club. Juliet didn’t invite Ben to the book club, after all. Maybe some of us do want a change.
Some characters, like Hurley, are easy to read. He could only be good. The rest of them, even Sun, are harder to read. Sawyer’s not the only one who’s done bad things.
But, Juliette is impossible to read. It could either way. There could be an explanation to exonerate her. There could not be.
Interestingly, this balances with the theory that ambiguity is actually intended to dominate, so that at the end, an equally strong case about both the rational and supernatural explanations are true. See ProfOzone’s “Twilighter’s Theory” and “Paranormal vs. Supernatural”.
The ambiguous, two-things-could-be-equally-true ending would be a pay off of the black and the white, ying and yang symbolism that’s been there since the beginning.

I disagree with the idea that Hurley could ONLY be good. If, by using the numbers, he opened the box, and the box gives us what we wish for, then he has (on some level of consciousness) wished for terrible things to happen to everyone around him. I’m not saying that he is bad, just that he could be.
Maybe she’s the one character that will keep us guessing the entire time about which side she’s on, only to foil BOTH sides in the end.
