Does anyone here see a setup?

— lostboy09

Ok lets review here….what is one of the underlying themes of this television show? Conning right? And from all we have seen so far in relation to cons and deception and betrayal…..all I can say is….I smell a rat! Does anyone here see a setup?

So Locke walks in the room Kate is in just to tell her goodbye, notice Lockes busted hand (courtesy of HappyAthiest)….wonder whats up with that. Anyways, the one thing that Locke said that stood out most to me was when he stated that forgiveness isn’t one of “their” strong suits……yet they sure as hell had no problem forgiving Mount Baldy for killing Mikhail now did they?!? Who the hell are these people and what screwed ideology do they perscribe to! Anyway, Im getting off topic. So we are just to believe that they genuially left their homes….all came out in the yards wearing their “gear” and threw sleep gas in on our losties….yeah that wasnt a setup at all. Oh, oh and Kate wakes to find herself in the damn haunted jungle with none other than guess who….freakin Juliette….what are the odds? Does that really make sense to you guys? Heres a question…even if the others did infact leave Julliette, aka Blonde Devil, behind…..why the hell would she just happen to handcuff herself to Kate. Anybody buying her story of not wanting to be left behind again? PLEASE give me a break. First off, if that were true, that would mean that Juliett would have had to found Kates unconciouss body after awakening herself from the gas or to have been laid by the others right next to Kate, woke up, and then just happend to have a nice pair of handcuffs on her to then attatch herself to Kate. thats insane!!

One thing that debunks that would be that would mean that the gas kept Kate out a whole hell of alot longer than it did Juliette, as she had time to wake, attatch the handcuffs, and then dose back off to lala land.(even thoudh I realize that Jack was out cold for much longer then both of them ) To be honest with you…this is actually kinda sloppy work for the brilliant “others”. We all can see straight through this one. Its a freaking setup….Juliette was no more gased than an inmate assigned to the electric chair (sorry that was a little much I admit). Point is, she is lying. It was a test of some kind and the subject was Kate. And Ozone was right when he said in a post that Sayid has a sense of telling when people are lying or hiding something. We have seen it time and time again. He is on to Juliette. As he damn well should be. And I hope that he tortures her endlessly until she breaks!

Now one last thing….anyone notice how they said on this episode the others left no trail….just like they “disappeared into thin air”? And we have also learned in season 2 “they” dont leave tracks right? Anybody ever stop to think that the reason they dont leave tracks is because THEY dont travel over ground…..they travel under it. Through tunnels (which we all know are there) under the island….oh and those legs we saw walk past Jin and Eko in season two were most certainly not the “others” we know. They are the other others to come in season 4. I know this isnt a theory….its just a rant but it is clear that Juliette is doing one of two things. She is either still in cohoots with the others and infiltrating the losties in a less descrete manner then Ethan……OR she is no longer with the others but is wanting to stay with the losties to be able to find something to offer back up to the others to get back on their (others) good side….perhaps something they want, something they are interested in….like Aaron for example. Either way she is bad news and cant be trusted…..she will do anything to get off this island.

Personally I hate Juliette…..and now Locke is really pissing me off. Hes turning…..slowly but surely he is turning against our losties…..its written all over his face. Hes a goon….a puppet and Ben is pulling his strings! So I smell a rat….two actually. And hell…..I dont even know if I trust Jack anymore…not that he has turned but because he will let his good heart get in the way of thinking logically and will protect Juliett because she “protected” him in captivity. Right about now…..Im almost rooting for Sawyer to be the man in charge. gah im frustrated!! So all this being said…..I say again, anybody see a set up?

Now sit down in this beanbag chair and breathe…

    Go ahead… breathe deeeeep…

    That’s it…

Hey lostboy, you gotta check out my comment on the What Does Juliet Know? theory. I am definitely in agreement with you on this one. When she was telling Kate why she neglected to mention the handcuff key, that was the worst acting I have ever seen by anyone on this show. The only logical conclusion to come to is that she was meant to make the lie seem unconvincing to the audience so we know she is trying to infiltrate the losties and not join them.

I also agree with you about Locke, the first two seasons he was my favorite character, outside of Eko that is. Then, the crap he has been pulling this season and his gullibility have made me slowly come to hate him. The character is still great, but he is no longer someone to root for. Also, the messed up hand, I have a feeling he may have hurt it beating the crap out of the man from Tallahassee.

Jack is definitely too trusting for his own good. Which is why Sayid, who always seems to end up being right, should be the person people look to for guidance instead of just being the guy people look too when someone needs torturing.

One more thing, when Juliet was giving her bullcrap excuse to Kate and Kate seemed to take it at face value it made me feel as if I was taking crazy pills. How could Kate not see through that giant, steaming pile of bullcrap.

On second thought the pile was so big she would have to look around it.

Well… I guess I’m not ready to write-off John just yet. I wonder if he put in any good words for Jack? I wonder if he told Jack good bye? That whole thing was just incredibly interesting. I’m sure John knew the place was bugged, too, so… who knows. John’s been manipulated before in the very worst ways… I’m not willing to assume he’s letting it happen again so easily or obviously. We’ll see. And why the heck would the Others even care that Kate killed her jackass stepfather? The answer to that question isn’t obvious to me (I mean, I’m not particularly surprised they care, I just can’t understand why they do).

Prof….I dont know if breathing is going to get it done brother. I need….sleep! And Nathan I did read your post before posting this ….and thanks because you really helped me get all of this out, knowing there was more out there that were with me on this. And yea Nate, Jack has always been my fav but Locke was a close second….but I cant take him anymore….hes to damn gullible and for all the wisdom he has….his gullibility really bring him down….I guess kinda like Jack too. And I also thought that he hurt his hand beating Cooper. Now….I couldnt agree more with you about Sayid. There is no other Candidate! Jack is vested in protection of Juliette, Locke is losing it, Kate is a screw up from the word go, and Sawyer…..is Sawyer, tiger dont change his stripes. Sayid is the ONLY one I would completely trust as a savior and leader!

Well… Kate was pretty stunned in general, I think… I got the impression she didn’t believe it but what was she going to say? But when Juliet asked, “Do we have to talk?” and Kate said, “Nope!” it was kind of like when Jack didn’t ask that flight attendant staring at him through the bars of his cage any good questions. I mean, the viewers can’t be the only people in these situations who wonder what the hell’s going on. :-D

Well, a good night’s sleep ought to help then, my friend.

Or have a cookie. I promise by the time you’re done with it you’ll feel right as rain.

I dont wont to give up on Locke either Prof but come on! All we have seen this guy do in has flashbacks is be duped and give into trusting people. And not just Cooper either (eddie). He has been manipulate horribly…BUT He NEVER learns! To be honest I am worried the writers had him planned the whole time to turn against the others and become a bad guy. I say that because its the same writers that had orignally planned to kill Jack in the pilot episode as they thought it would be a shock to kill of the seemingly main character first episode. They are all about shock value. So who is to say they wouldnt love turning a “good” lostie to a “bad” other! I would like to believe he knew that room was bugged…but I doubt he did! And I too was wondering if these others were so damn smart how come they dont value forgiveness or understanding (like Kates pligjt) and Nate I totally agree with you on Kate buying that BS!

Ha….I could use a cookie I guess….or a fifth of Jaeger! And Ozone you are right about the audience cant be the only ones clueless because they cant keep us completely clueless if the characters arent also.

After watching this episode there’s no doubt of a setup, but my question is who is being setup… It’s VERY obvious that juliet is not being completely honest, and knowing the mastermine that is Ben, we can assume that he put her up to this, and is relying on the bond that she has with Jack (created again by Ben when holding Jack captive) to get juliet a good rep with everyone.

however, could it be possible that Jack could be aware of this and he and company are really setting her up? This would be an awesome parallel to the end of the second season where Michael tried to set everyone up. I know its a stretch, hopeffully Jack isnt as trusting in Juliet as the episode let on. Another comment, after thinking about previous episodes, Ben is a genius. I have a feeling he has set virtually every event involving the others and Kate/Locke/Jack up.

  14. Drea Apr 5, 2007 6:12 a.m. Comment: 14

I fully agree with this being a set-up. I kinda think that maybe the others abandoned the camp and they expect/want the losties to come back and inhabit it, so they can watch them…why i have no idea. Then again, it’s 7 am here and i havent slept since i watched the episode, besides, i dont think my idea is quite as crazy as my husbands thinking the whole island is what is left from eden after the continents separated and the smoke-monster being the guardian and whatnot…

    MAN i need sleep!

I wonder if Juliet is going to be looking for that radio that she and Ben left behind.

  16. Nickee Apr 5, 2007 4:08 p.m. Comment: 16

I love these posts in particular! Bfests! Juliette the blond devil. HA! I can’t stand her either and definitely think she is infiltrating the camp for Ben. I just want to shake Jack for being so naive about women! Locke’s hand…I can’t really see him beating Cooper up, it isn’t really in his character is it? Of course, if someone threw me out a window I might want to take a few swings myself. When Kate was gased, she had handcuffs on, Juliette probably knew that the one person that would put up the biggest fight against her joining the losties would be Kate and she needed to get on better terms with her first, so she handcuffed herself to Kate….

  17. Nickee Apr 5, 2007 4:25 p.m. Comment: 17

Does anyone have any idea’s about WHY the others left their camp? Where are they going? Why did they have masks on?

  18. ProfOzone Apr 5, 2007 5:22 p.m. Comment: 18

Well, it looked as though they were putting masks on because they were about to go gas a few people but, then again, they were just throwing gas canisters into locked buildings, so…

OK, so Juliet put one of Kate’s cuffs on herself… did she carry Kate out into the woods, then, shutting off the fence in the process? (She knew it was off.) Well then she’d have had to “wake up” a LOT sooner than everyone else did. Granted, Jack woke up a lot later than Kate did, but… yeah… no matter how you look at it Juliet’s up to something, and I’m pretty certain it will benefit Ben somehow whether or not Juliet knows it yet.

  19. lostboy09 Apr 5, 2007 10:52 p.m. Comment: 19

ok first drea your husband isnt that crazy lol. I too at once had that same theory! That the island is what was Eden and the monster is a gaurdian of sorts. However, now Im not so sure about that anymore. Second, Ozone I love the way you think….I had forgotten about the radio. Thirdly, Nickee thanks for the love and your right I had forgotten that kate was in handcuffs afterall. And I am very curious as to where the others are headed and as far as the gas masks go , my buddy said the same thing. He was like, they wore the masks cos they were smoking the losties….but the losties were in freakin buildings! The others were out in the yard for petes sake! I think they may need the masks for when they go underground if they do go underground at all, which is a theory of min. Out.

  20. lostboy09 Apr 5, 2007 10:53 p.m. Comment: 20

and yes Kat, it is strange that Kate is so against Juliette…..I think its because she saw the chemistry between her and Jack and it has made her jealous not to mention she is infact an other. Or was..err…whatever! And yes she is a better actress then that scene allowed us to believe!

  21. lostboy09 Apr 5, 2007 11:11 p.m. Comment: 21

Oh and ….since when do freaking Fertility doctors have a blackbelt in ninjitsu and (as she stated) has been in situations that would force her arm to be dislocated 4 times already!??!! WHO THE HELL IS THIS WOMAN!!

  22. ProfOzone Apr 5, 2007 11:19 p.m. Comment: 22

  23. disisdeway Apr 6, 2007 7:41 p.m. Comment: 23

I smell rats, but not the same ones you smell.

This is a really good theory, but just on personal opinion, I think the situation is reversed: I think Jack is a spy in the survivor camp, and I think Locke is a spy in the others’ camp.

  24. lostboy09 Apr 7, 2007 12:02 a.m. Comment: 24

Wait T.J., are you suggesting that Jack has been comprimised and is spying for the others while Locke is spying on the others for the losties? Wow, that would be cool now wouldn’t it?

  25. WildConclusions Apr 11, 2007 2:32 p.m. Comment: 25

I’m surprised that there hasn’t been anyone in disagreement. Not because I think anybody is wrong, but because there is equal, if not more, evidence suggesting otherwise.

I’ll wait to see about Locke because since his inner-hunter has resurfaced, it is equally possible that he is setting a trap for Ben.

Juliet is a complicated character. I actually like this quality because it makes her unpredictable. She has her own motives separate from those even within her society. Most people still find it hard to shake the impression that she is working for Ben or The Others in general, but I can think of a few things that suggest otherwise.

Her name. She is named after the statesman/philosopher, Edmund Burke. Burke was a member of British Parliament who supported the American colonies during the events that led up to the American revolution. His stance put him at odds with the edicts of King George III, the head of his government.

Her past. Juliet was a kinder, more caring person before her time on the island. Speculation abounds as to the cause of her bitterness, but it should be noted that she was hesitant to take the job her recruiters were offering. There is also a noticeable animosity she has for Ben that indicates that she has very little respect for him. Taking a cue from her namesake, it may not be a hatred of Ben as a person, but maybe as a leader, his philosophy, or his treatment of “the losties.”

Her actions. She attempted to kill Ben. When that failed, she negotiated an escape from the island and its people, something she has obviously been looking forward to for a long time, going so far as to keep count of her exact time on the island. As part of the conditions of her departure, she had to help Kate and Sawyer escape. To do that, she killed Danny. Those are not what I would call the actions of a sheep. Those are the actions of a woman who serves herself.

  26. ichiro Apr 11, 2007 6:02 p.m. Comment: 26

I agree that she is complex, but I disagree that she was named for Edmund Burke. The character in the narrative who was named for Edmund Burke is Edmund Burke, Juliet’s ex-husband. Both the character and his namesake believed that technology had to be tightly controlled by appropriate, governmental power structures in order to be useful to mankind. Ironically, he was hit by a city bus.

  27. lostboy09 Apr 13, 2007 2:21 a.m. Comment: 27

Well Wild you hit on it when you said a women who serves herself. And herself only which makes her dangerous! Pluse lets not assume that she attempted to kill Ben at all…..it was more likely a complete set up.
