LOST has lost its touch?

— lostboy09

This is more a questionaire than a full fledged theory. I kinda just need some feedback from you guys ok?

Well I have stated before that there are a large group of us, my friends, that are all into lost. Many times we all gather round and watch together….however this becomes less and less frequent as the season progresses because people cant stay caught up with the show!! Sorry, just venting on the fellas! Now, within that group, already in season three we have seen some drop out…..they “gave” up on the show. At least in season….they said they would wait for DVD. They didnt like the direction of the show and said it was progressing too slowly….that “LOST has lost its touch”. Ofcourse, we the faithful told them to stay with it. Then the network station G4’s program “Attack of the Show“‘s anchors (who are fans of the show) come out and say the same thing…..that “Lost had lost it”. And furthermore I heard that the ratings have dropped signifigantly. Personally I dont give a crap about any of that….I am commited and faithful to the writers of this show and trust their creative abilities!

Now I know that season three was very slow progressing early on….but man has it picked up! Ever since we met Mikhail and all it has been floored! My question is did anyone else have any problems with season three thus far or has anyone “given up”? And if so….I think I may know why.

From a writing standpoint, seasons one and two were a dream. Why? Because in dealing with a mystery show of this type….to provide a strange element that appears to be a VERY important clue or element…..it keeps people glued. It gives a vested interest for people to share in….not mentioning characters! When you can create a strange, mysterious investment for characters to interact with and what appears to be part of a bigger puzzle to be solved….well as a writer….you have a goldmine….a driving force behind your work. Case in point, season one…..the hatch…..season 2….the button.

Season one, early on was the development of characters. allowing the audience to get to know the characters and learn to identify with them and thus pick out favorites….to sorta have a vested interest to the show. Then there was the hatch. It kept us all coming back for more….wondering what was inside and when it would be opened. Then…came the button. Season two….what the hell is the deal with the button? What will happen if they dont push it? Will they ever not push it? WOW! Kept us all interested right? Well…..anybody know what the driving force of season three is? I guess early on we could all say the safety of and what happend to Jack, Kate, and Sawyer….but we all got bored with that real quick after….nothing …really…happend at all….until the Sayid centric episode. I believe this is the problem with season three….there is no driving force (other then the ultimate driving force of any plot which is ….what the hell is going on?, the overall story) There is no hatch this season, there is no button. I think people became so accustom to having that comfort there…..they miss it. One thing though….the hatch wasnt introduced until mid to late season one…..some people are hoping some “interest” will present itself now that we are mid way through season three….and wont just be presented in the finale (which is how it looks like its going to happen).

Personally, I think the next hatch or button will be the discovery of another peoples on the island…..more savage and brutal than we can imagine. See my post on “other others”. Unfortunately I dont think we will see this until the finale and it will be the driving force behind the final season….season 4. (and yes it will be the final season…. as much as I hate to say it, theres no way to stretch this show out any further than four seasons). And I will go ahead and say this now because if I dont I know I will be blasted for it…..the smoke monster does not count as driving force. We have known about it since early season one and it does not count in this argument as a driving factor because it is one of the biggest mysteries and will prob not be solved till near the end of the show. Plus it isn’t seen enough to count. Neither is the “sickness”. Out.

Good points, really, lostboy. As for me, though, the only thing that bugs me about season 3 is I’m watching it as it actually airs (at a friend’s house). Watching on DVD was much better. Well, I mean… I enjoy watching at my friend’s house, but I’d rather we all be watching it on DVDs. No commercials. No promos. No waiting a week between episodes. But, again… I think you make some valid points.

Hey prof let me ask you something and im glad you brought it up! I think i read somewhere you watched both seasons one and two on dvd right? Well I stumbled into this show season two opener at a friends house….i then immediately went back and watched season one on dvd and watched season two on tv. Tell me …..is it not MUCH better watching it on DVD? I have many a friend who refuse to watch it during the season preferring to watch it only on DVD…and they even have dvr and can fast forward commercials! Is there not something about just watching this show on DVD that makes it better? Im even thinking about holding off soon for only DVD of it…..BUT IM SO addicted i cant do that

Definietly - I live in Germany where just season 2 is on TV - but most real fans have already seen the entire season 2 - like me. So I keep pulling season 3 off the web as it airs and then copy it for my friends who are into the show. But they NEVER want to have each episode as it airs. They ALWAYS say “No - wait until you have like 4 to 6 episodes together and then give it to me”. I think because the show STILL is good in providing great cliffhangers and people just HATE to wait to find out until the cliffhanger is resolved. :)

Well, for me personally, promos and previews and comments from the producers and extras and online content actually take away from the experience of the show. (I don’t watch the “extras” on the DVDs.) Add to that having to wait a week or more between each episode… it’s easy to forget things. AND… when you can watch five shows in one sitting the plot just doesn’t seem to be moving as slowly even if those five shows DON’T show you much.

But I’m watching season 3 as it airs because I like hanging out with my friends and because it helps me avoid spoilers… and because I was interested in taking a shot at participating in the Lost forums community (I don’t generally like forums, but I thought this would be fun and it certainly has been). So there are advantages both ways. Which do I prefer? Depends on what day you’re asking me. :-)

I will say this though… watching as it airs isn’t about finding things out as soon as possible. I could easily have waited for season 3 on DVD if I felt confident friends of mine weren’t going to give everything away before then!

The first season to me was definitely about what the hatch contain but I really think you needed to have season 2 to understand season 3 fully. We found out that once they opened the hatch things would change…and they did. They had more guns, more food, and a worry that was entirely knew, AKA…the button. The second season raised more questions about the others and that’s what lead to season 3. Now the directors and ABC plan to keep the show to five seasons. I really hope they do that. They have said that people are tired of two many questions and that is why they have been losing viewers. So they stopped raising a lot of questions and they are trying to lead us to some answers. I’m sure that is what this season will be about. We definitely just have to take the journey to get us there. Who knows what will happen. They have Julie now so we will see.

Yes i hear you roseserred but to give answers means ….there are no more questions or mysteries….and thats what this show is all about. So how can it survive any longer without its mystique? Plus, Lindeloff and Abrams both said they envisioned all the details of LOST playing out in 4 season, any more than 4 and they would walk. So yes ABC may see it going 5 but if Lindeloff and Abrams walk out in 4…..it could lose its touch for real. Who knows how many actors will want to leave by that time! But Ozone, I know how you feel….I love them on DVD but I also love being a part of the exp as the season plays out, viewing with friends and interacting with all of you guys here online. And Maik you are right about the cliff hangers….alot of people just cant wait for them.
