Ben likes mind games
— HappyAtheist
These people are seriously good liars. And I think they’re playing mind games about mind games.
Did Juliet let Kate win? When Kate attacked her in the rec room, she put up more than a good fight. Was her defeat willed? Did she want to see how far Kate would go?
Were Kate supposed to undergo some sort of test? If so, did she pass?
What were the white flashes when the monster approached them? If it’s made of smoke, why are they safe in the trees?
Is Juliet being sent to infiltrate the Losties? Did the Others realize that Jack was fond of her, and would protect her, regardless of what the other Losties said?
Why did Jack wake up about a day after Kate and Juliet?
Will Sayid torture Juliet in the next episode?

Juliet’s handling of Kate in the rec room raised questions as to how Jack ever got the jump on her when he was imprisoned. The most likely answer is her demeanor toward Jack was all an act. She’s also lying to Kate, obviously. When did she know she had a key to the handcuffs? Why would she even have been GIVEN a key to the handcuffs? It’s not impossible that she’s not entirely in the know about what she is, actually, doing with Kate and the castaways because Ben knows that the best way to get someone to do something is to give them a reason to WANT to do it, but even in that case, Juliet is so desperate to get off the island there is no relationship she won’t throw away to get it. Either way, she can’t be trusted.
If the smoke monster had wanted them, the smoke monster could have had them. I have no idea what the flashes of light were. If they are what John saw, then it may lend credence to my own suspicions that Juliet has a bond with the island (but still has strong reasons to want to leave, in contrast to John). Kate seems to have a way of attracting the thing. Perhaps it has a taste cold-blooded killers in the same way the Others seem to have an aversion to them. (Juliet’s not one, as far as we can tell… the man she killed was about to kill two others in cold blood himself.) Do the Others really not know what the smoke monster is? Did they really build the sonic fence for another purpose and simply lucked out that it kept out the smoke monster as well? I don’t find that likely.
Sayid seems to have a gift for telling when a person is lying (which isn’t the same as knowing what the truth is, as demonstrated when he tortured Sawyer).
No matter what Juliet’s motives are now, no matter what her state of mind, Ben is definitely in control.
The questions you didn’t ask… what happened to John’s right hand? It was bandaged. What are we to assume happened to John’s father?
hmmm…. I hadn’t really thought about the hand….I wonder whats the story behind that.
Was it just me or did Juliet’s excuse about why she didn’t use the key before seem very much like a bad lie. The actress who plays her is very good, therefore I believe we can only conclude that she was supposed to make the viewer see that her excuse was a lie.
Which brings me to my next point, Sayid is the person who truly should be leading the losties. I believe this because he is the only one who always seems to distrust the people who deserve to be distrusted. He didn’t believe Ben’s story, and he probably believes Juliet was left behind in order to infiltrate the losties’ camp, which I also believe. His one transgression was when he tortured Sawyer who, while not being guilty of what he was being accused of, was definitely hiding things and lying about things.
Sure, Jack is, and has been, a good leader, but he is too darn trusting. Sayid’s instincts are just better than anyone else’s.
Nope, it wasn’t just you. The actress did seem to make it look as though the character herself wasn’t feeling confident about her story.
And obviously we’re on the same page with Sayid, though I don’t have any particular feelings about who should lead… or whether or not anyone should lead, actually.
Obviously there is some kind of mind game going on with Juliest returning to the Losties. That said, she was hester-prynned after helping Jack, and if the Others or Dharma or whoever are on this Island for a grand purpose that involves ‘being a good person’ perhaps her stabbing Ben in the back took her off the list, made her a bad person, and disqualified her from taking the next step. We know that there will be a 3rd group or a more difficult challenge coming soon, at some point the Others can’t remain a threat to the survivors and that conflict has to simmer down a little.
Also, I was under the impression that Juliet had handcuffed herself to Kate or had at least claimed to be the handcuffer.
And it was a little obvious that Juliet has some ridiculous self-defense skills. It seemed almost superhuman, reminded be of the brunt force that Locke’s Dad used to push him out the window, and the strength that Ethan Rom used to beat Jack to a pulp. So where did it go when Kate beat her ass? Clearly she’s playing possum for some reason.
Also, there’s a pattern of ‘trading’ survivors for others. Perhaps Juliet was left behind so Locke could come along..as if they now have an extra ticket to the dance, and he meets the qualifications.
And something about the smoke monster’s flash made me think of an x-ray, I wonder if one of them is pregnant…kate and sawyer’s love child anyone? I kid.
Really, I think Prof is onto something when he talks about ‘having a taste for cold-blooded killers’, the smoke monster knows who is a THREAT, it is a self-defense mechanism, like the ink of an octopus.
And my question for everyone is….why did the Others have to leave?????
P.S.- the sawyer and hurley scenes were unbearable
Right, katrina, but then why wouldn’t the smoke monster be after Juliet? Or was it?
While Eko and Kate believed they were protecting someone, they killed in cold blood, but Juliet actually killed someone who was about to kill somebody else. I wonder if, to the smoke monster, that’s a difference that makes a difference.
For the record, I don’t think Ben was bothered by the killing that Juliet did, but he had to let her trial play out… he knew Jack would come to her defense and give Ben an excuse to save her.
Definitely think the smoke monster was after Kate for not repenting. Juliet saved her by getting her across the fence when she could have left her on the other side. I think Juliet had something to do with chasing away the first monster’s attack. The flashes happened while the camera was trained on Juliet. She knows what these things are, but she’s not telling yet.
I don’t trust Juliet at all. I think she is infiltrating the camp for info. The Others need something from the survivors. Claire’s baby? Also, how convenient that a walkie talkie exists at the beach camp…courtesy of Paulo. That thing was planted there for him to retrieve. Juliet will no doubt make use of it to contact the Others.
Locke is going with the Others to find out info about the Island. He will probably pretend to be one of them until he gets what he wants. He has played the fool for too long. His father, I think, has been working with the Others since his disappearance after shoving John out of the window. I think he ended up on the Island and has been there. He has the potential to be this evil Jacob.. or at least a higher authority in the rank of Others. His “appearance in the magic box” is a ruse to keep Locke nearby. Ben has played him like a fiddle since the beginning.
Juliet killed Danny as part of Ben’s plan. He and Juliet are still tied together somehow, Her being “cast out” of the Others is a ruse. She’s still in the group.
I’m inclined to agree with you on all points, darrin, although I’m not prepared to go so far as to think Locke’s Dad is a ranking Other. I do think he was already on the island somehow. He didn’t just show up magically any more than Jack did to perform surgery on Ben.
Ok first off Juliet can’t be trusted. Every time you see her with out one of the losties she’s kind of hard ass and bitchy like when she was in the pearl with ben or at the book club meeting in the premeire. Then when shes around losties she acts all full of a motherly type loveiness. And she definatly let kate kick her ass cause the moves she showed against kate before were not something a fertility doc should know. As for the smoke monster not attacking them in the trees it definatly wanted to spare one of the. It has a light side and a darkside. the lightside has only been seen twice. Once by lock and once in this episode. My theory is that since we havent seen anything in the flashbacks showing that lock or juliet have done anything overly bad then they are not going to be killed by the monster. Every time someone gets killed by the monster or gets killed when you here there sounds its when they are “sinners” (for lack of a better word). Ecko was a murderer and drug dealer. You hear the monster when palo and nikki get bit. They were murderers and theives. You also heard it before shannon died. She had tried to scam her brother making her a thief. but juliet and locke have done nothing bad so they are fine.
oh yeahj and i think that the whole “trail” of Juliett was a scam to get Jack to trust her more. And i dont think shes really all that gung ho about getting off the island
i meant to say trial not trail sorry
Juliet not gung ho to get off the island? Perhaps not. It just seems like the chip that Ben uses against her. I guess we’ll see.
yes but when have you heard ben use it against her. the only time you hear about her wanting to get off is when shes talking to jack. I think she just uses it as a way of bonding him to her even more. I really think the scene of her and ben in the pearl station really gives away alot on her personality. And it really says that shes working with ben not jack
You’re right of couse. Which is why I think your suggestion is plausible. At the same time, though, I think Ben does tend to have something on everyone. And the getting off the island thing is something he could have on Juliet. But we’ll see.
