The key to their survival is in facing their fears.

The entire experience is a psychological test of human behavior. If you have ever run a lab experiement, it feels an awful lot like the LOST characters are rats. I think the island is a psychological experiment, and the magnetic field is what has kept it out of sight. I am not sure if the plane was meant to land there but I think when Desmond messed with the field the first time, it definately contributed to it’s arrival.
The people running the experiment were excited and thrilled to have new “rats” to test. They removed the children (so I think the Others are part of the experiement) because children are too young to test. I don’t have all the pieces figured out yet like how they could let people die or why some of the adults get taken…but I do believe the key is in the last episode of the season. I believe the purpose of the whole experiment is irony. Everyone is stranded and no one knows how to go about getting “saved”. They do know, however, that they have one job…to push a button. Ironically, I believe, that button is what keeps them from being discovered. The button is actually signal for others. If it keeps getting pushed then the experiment continues. If the magnetic force is released, however, then the experiment has been broken or “discovered”. The experiment, therefore, is to test what it will take for someone to break the bubble. The only way the people on the island can be “saved” is by taking a chance and having the courage to sacrifice themselves for others. It sorta has a Jesus ring to it but that’s another theory. So in order to be saved, someone must make a sacrifice and be the hero. Once the device goes off a signal is set and the guys in the Arctic are paid to wait for the device to go off. I don’t think the Hanso foundation ever expected anyone to actually have the courage to set it off. I don’t know where Penny fits into this or what will happen next…but I do strongly believe it’s all one big psychological experiment. The key to their survival lies in facing their fears.
