Although I don’t have the time or access to the episodes, I believe a brief explication will be sufficient be relatively convincing.
I’m basing this theory on the idea that the hatch was powering some sort of cloaking device.
I would like to ammend that by saying that it was not only cloaking the island, per se, but actually creating an artificial climate inside of its confines. That is to say, “the island” actually exists in a freezing, barren climate, but has been terraformed by the Hanso Foundation to be habitable.
I recall the pilot that Jack and Kate ran into saying they were over three-thousand miles off course; this could easily put the crash-site of the two flights within the bounds of the antarctic.
This, in my mind, is the only way to account for the polar bear Sawyer killed (polar bears are native only to the continent of Antarctica).
I would also like to address the two men at the monitoring station at the end of the season finale. It seems unlikely that they would be far away from where Desmond was last known to be.
If anyone has any comments or questions, I’d be happy to continue a dialogue in the comments.

The people at the end is season 2 are in Iceland, they are aprt of the Norvik institute.
i believe that the hatch experiment inadvertently increased the electromagnetic energy, thereby increasing the cloak.
