God doesn’t know how long we’ve been here. He can’t see this island any better than the rest of the world can.

— Wombert

In “Live Together, Die Alone”, Desmond activates the failsafe, and supposedly shuts the electromagnetic field “engine” down. This might have rendered the island accessible from the outer world again.

If we think back of the very beginning, there must have been a time where the island was visible and accessible from the outer world - otherwise, nobody would be there, none of the stations would have been built, the island would have never been used as a location for the Dharma experiments.

In a flashback in “Live Together, Die Alone”, Kelvin explains to Desmond that behind the sealed wall, there’s a geologically unique source of electromagnetism. We also learn that the “incident”, there was a leak, and since then, the numbers had to be entered every 108 minutes to keep the system from… well “overheating” or whatever.

So here’s what I think: the machines installed back in the olden times kept the electromagnetic field at a certain level. This created a bubble around the island that hides it from passing traffic, satellites, everything. “Henry Gale” once said:

God doesn’t know how long we’ve been here. He can’t see this island any better than the rest of the world can.

I recently read a theory saying that the timer thing was a kind of dead man’s switch - if all the scientists on the island die, nobody is left to push the button, the system overloads, and the island becomes visible.

I don’t think that makes sense. First, from what we know, this number entering thing has been installed after the incident. The entire system had been in place before, though. Second, the Swan station is pretty “bulletproof”. You can’t easily die in there, and there’s usually a team of two people in it. Also, I doubt that Swan station personnel was ever designated to do any scientific work after the incident - if you have to enter a couple of numbers every 108 minutes, you’re busy enough.

So, most likely, the System Termination device shuts the entire thing down and reveals the island to the outer world. It won’t be found immediately, because if nobody’s looking for it, nobody will find it, only by accident. It’s not very large either. But I definitely think that the cloaking bubble is gone now. That would also explain why “Henry” seemed so angry about the discharge

Update

This is, by the way, not at all entirely impossible, even if a “cloaking bubble” sounds a lot like science fiction - scientists say it can be done
