on the island to die instead of others

An example of dying when you are no longer needed comes from dear old Artz. His only purpose on the island was to show Jack, Kate and Locke how to carry dynamite, once he did that well… we all know what happened to him! lol
An example of dying in the place of another comes from Boone The day that they discovered the plane Lockes paralysis returned, this was to prevent him from climbing the tree as the island knew that whoever went up there would come down quicker. Locke said himself that if has was able to go up the tree, then he would.
Shannons purpose on the island was to show Sayid that he could find love again. Then she died so Sayid would get his interrogating edge back coz if Shannon hadn’t of died then Sayid would not have interrogated Ben

The “theory” I subscribe to takes this idea even a bit farther, suggesting that the people who died in the plane crash were of no use at all to the island, and some people are of greater use than others. Each person is on the island for a reason, and when that reason is fulfilled they are done for. I think Mr. Eko’s last words to Locke indicate this is so.
Excellent that is exactly what i was thinking too!
Hmmm… Something is determining whose time is up and whose time will continue. This something is for the benefit of something else, and it presents itself as either fate or the black smoke, aka the monster. This something is both necessary, for the wellbeing of something else, and ugly and violent- the deaths of those who are no longer needed are very painful and cruel, as in being blown up, crushed by a plane, shot, or slammed down by black smoke. There is definitely a struggle between good and evil…
