Biography

Prior to Oceanic Flight 815

Libby claimed to have attended medical school for one year before deciding to become a clinical psychologist.

She appears in the flashback portion of three episodes:

* "Dave": Libby is a patient at the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute. No reason is given for her institutionalization. Considerable speculation centers around Hurley's imaginary friend Dave, the titular focal point of the episode, and the David Libby calls her recently deceased husband in "Live Together, Die Alone".
* "?"; While at the airport in Sydney, Libby interrupts a heated conversation between Eko and a woman named Charlotte, asking if everything is all right.
* "Live Together, Die Alone": After introducing herself to him as Elizabeth, Libby gives Desmond Hume the boat he uses for his race around the world. The boat, named "Elizabeth" and hailing from Newport Beach, was a gift from her husband David, who as of the meeting between Libby and Desmond had recently died.

The producers have said that although Libby is dead, her story will continue through other characters’ flashbacks.

On the Island

Libby was a tailsection passenger on Oceanic Airlines Flight 815. Immediately following the crash, she sets the broken leg of Donald. Libby is one of the five remaining when Jin, Sawyer and Michael encounter them. She also talks to Michael saying she thinks Sawyer is more scared than he acts. She submits to Ana-Lucia’s leadership, following orders without question. After Shannon is shot by Ana-Lucia, Libby stands up to Ana-Lucia, by refusing to tie up Sayid, and insisting that Ana-Lucia needs to let the mid-section survivors go.

Hurley comments that he may have met her somewhere else. She distracts him by trying on a purple top and says that Hurley had stepped on her foot while boarding flight 815. Libby helps Claire unblock the memories of what happened to her when Ethan took her. Libby tries to help Hurley with his food addiction. After Hurley starts hallucinating, she tries to help again, but he refuses her help. Lastly, she talks him out of jumping off the cliff, and they kiss.

In “Two For The Road,” Libby accepts Hurley’s offer of a picnic for two. They walk to a nearby beach, but Hurley forgot blankets, so Libby heads to the hatch to get some blankets for the picnic, while Hurley returns to the main camp to get some wine. Libby walks into the hatch immediately after Michael shot Ana-Lucia. She calls Michael’s name and he turns around and shoots her twice in the abdomen. In the next episode, Sawyer runs to her side, to find that Libby survived the shooting, but is in critical condition. She begins to cough up blood and is treated by Jack, who administers her a dose of heroin from one of the Virgin Mary statues, presumably to ease her suffering. Hurley is notified of Libby’s condition and runs to her side. He says he is sorry for forgetting the blankets for their picnic. Libby coughs out Michael’s name, though Jack does not realize that she is naming her assailant. Before she can say anything more, Libby dies.

Libby and Ana-Lucia’s funeral takes place in the episode “Three Minutes.” Hurley buries her and tells Michael that he will join the attack on the Others, wanting to avenge Libby’s death. Hurley later finds out that Michael killed her.
